My 101 List – The Story

Every person has events take place when they are younger that shape and guide how they lead the rest of their life. For me, one such event took place in the early 1980s, just after I sold my first company. Without going into all the details, suffice it to say that I had a close brush with my own mortality, and it made me rethink my priorities and how I planned to lead my life going forward. At the time, I wasn’t exactly sure what it meant to live life on offense, but I decided that a good place to start was by giving myself a scorecard – a tool that I could use to make sure that I accomplish everything I want to with my life. I spent the next few days writing down all of my personal and professional goals and there are 101 items on the list. So far I’ve managed to check off 74 of them, and I fully intend to do the rest, although going into outer space may be a bit of a reach.Over the years, I’ve encouraged many people, friends and strangers alike, to create their own lists, to chart out their own goals and dreams and to always live their lives on offense.

  1. 33. Support someone who makes a great breakthrough in science or art–I have a suggestion for this, Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski, who has made great strides in the treatment of cancer.

The website http://www.burzynskiclinic.com/ has information about Dr. Burzynski’s inspirational work.

There are two facebook pages “Burzynski, the Movie,” which is a documentary about his life and another page “Nobel Prize for Dr. Burzynski” to have him nominated for a Nobel Prize for his cancer break through. The actual website for the documentary is: http://www.burzynskimovie.com/ which has additional information.

  2. Ted,
It’s good to see you’ve continued with The List (first heard about it in the mid-90′s).

Hope all is well. If you find yourself in Austin, TX, look me up!

  3. This is the right blog for anyone who wants to find out about this topic You realize so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I actually would want…HaHa You definitely put a new spin on a topic thats been written about for years Great stuff, just great!

  4. Hi Ted,

reading the article in March 2011 issue of EO Octane magazine and noticed one of your unfulfilled travel goals is Australia.

Well, maybe I can give yo a reason to come down under! I am the organising committee chair for “ANZAC Summit” – our EO Australia and New Zealand Area event. It is on later this year 10 thru 12 November and we are looking for some guest speakers. Maybe you might like to get involved?

If you are interested in finding out more, please let me know!

If not, thanks for your amazing contribution to global entrepreneurship in being an EO Founder,.. and best wished from Down Under :-)

  5. After Watching the movie “Bucket List” with Freeman and Nicholson, and reading your list…I was inspired to create my own. It was amazing how many things I came up with that I had not done but WILL do, thank you for sharing!!!
Even my wife started on one once she heard about mine. It is because if this energy I am a fan of you as an owner (Wiz/Caps) and luv the films.

    PEACE!!!

  6. your list has go to a world cup and a safari…why didn’t you go to the WC in South Africa? it is a great country and hosted a wonderful world cup!

  7. If you change the colors for the wizards…might as well go back to the washington bullets. No one takes pride in rooting for the wizards, a name change and color change would be great for the franchise

  8. Regards item 33 on Ted’s do list, Either Ted or some one read the part about Ben Rich and Stealth Technology in “Skunk Works by Ben Rich. Circumstances and chance may very well have brought about a similar convergence for information manipulation providing a Strategic Advantage and/or tactical edges to those who do it first, e,g, “managing information based on meaning within the content and context” we can find the dots but do we know its “significance and meaning”. The math is correct (Assume Boolean Logic is the sound barrier and what the math says is that the barrier can be broken, toss precision and recall. A young company needs help.

Ben Rich worked for Lockheed and ran the Skunk Works.

  9. Ted, I am a big fan. Very interesting list. It’s interesting for what’s on it and for what’s not on it. You did not put anything on the list regarding your health! If I were in your position and had your goals, I would want to take steps to ensure my longevity. So why not set a goal of X% body fat by age ___? Not only can you do it, but you will feel so much better! Now that’s million dollar advice!

  10. Ted,

Heard about your list on the BS Report which was great. How old were you when you created it? The goals are amazing, just wondering your rough net worth at the time. My favorites are your family, golf (so humbling) and travel goals. Looks like you have a love for the ocean too, make sure you sail the Whitsunday islands when you go to Australia, they are amazing.

  11. Can you add “Retire Peter Bondra’s #12″ to your list? It’s well overdue. Thanks!

  13. Hi Ted,

I was just reading your list and it was very inspiring. I was just wondering how come you haven’t been to Australia yet? You’ve done so many other things that seem far more challenging – you’d think you would have done a trip to Australia by now. Just wondering. Also…I dunno about swimming with great white sharks lol…you are a brave man.

    Thanks for reading,

    Joseph R. (Toronto)

  14. Hello Ted, it was an honor and a pleasure seeing you speak on November 15 at the Aspen Institute. I noticed that number 70 on your
Iist is to go on safari in Africa and on the same day noticed that the Aspen Institute has a really neat safari program. Thanks for passing my card on to Raul. I’ll be in Washington, DC again Dec. 1-2 and would like to invite you to something if I could please have an email address to which to send the invitation. Also, I’m a huge basketball fan but have never been to a hockey game! Maybe we can catch a Wizards game when the Mavs, Spurs, or Rockets are in town and/or catch a hockey game.

  15. Truly enjoyed your talk at TEDx and your 101 check list. Wish the world has more entrepreneurs like yourself. Inspiring indeed! Thanks a lot. How about “Travel to Bhutan” (7th happiest country acc. to Happy Planet Index) and where Gross National Happiness (GNH) is the yardstick for development. Have a restful happy weekend! Best, Lotay

  16. So impressive I enjoyed reading your 101 check list.
All of that and you seem to be a humble man as I see you
walking around at the games. You have been truly blessed.
Maybe I will get a chance to meet you at the Washington
Cap’s Convention. I am driving 4 hours coming from south of Pittsburgh. Go Caps!!!! This will be year of the Stanley Cup!!! Rock the Red-Red Rockers!
I am going to buy your book.

  17. Thank you for sharing your accomplishments, life’s work, inspiration and great enthusiam at the Prudential conference on Tuesday! You have encouraged me to reach higher, but most importantly to do good! May the magic continue in your life!

  18. Hello Ted, Great list, sounds as if your life is nearly as blessed as our…It’s been a while and I just want to remind you that I thought the family beach house was supposed to be in Nantucket…(?)….LOL Regards, Robert

  19. thanks, I needed that. Great advice you have shared — today I started living life on offense.

  20. Ted,

You have get tick “Go To Australia” off your list. Sure it’ a long way to go but trust me you will see stuff there that you cannot see anywhere else in the world.

Yes I’m a biased Aussie but for a man that has ticked so many boxes it seems an awful shame you haven’t ticked that one yet.

Bring The Wizards on a pres-season tour – you’ll win thousands of new fans and help promote the game in the process!

  21. if you ever get to australia, go to melbourne. the best time to go is in september during aussie rules football finals (there playoffs). you should go to the grand final there at the MCG in melbourne which is on the last saturday in september (or go to the australia embassy which counts somewhat as australia because its australia sovereign). been to australia and its a great place to go (was in sydney in 1989).

  22. Well at least we have one thing in common… neither of us have played St. Andrews!

  23. Ted,

What a phenomenal list! You have many inspiring goals that others can look up to!

If you have a second, I posted a link to Ted’s Take on the home page of my web site which focuses on team owners in the MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL.

Good luck with the busy off-season!

    All the best,

  24. Have now heard you twice on CSPAN. Great to see a fine Jesuit education in fruition. I also was fortunate in having an SJ mentor at Marquette. My first appreciation of Catholic Social Teaching (CST).
Hope all of us can deliver as effectively as you are. An MFO inspiration.

  25. Thanks for the inspiration. I’ve added many things to my list from looking yours over. Now its time to start crossing them off.

  26. Your nearing the finish line to purchase the remaining majority interest in the Wizards and the verizon Center is the best news since the coming of Abe Polin.

Please take a moment sometime and go to http://www.lionsclubs.org and then let me know if there is anything our local clubs can do, either separately or working together, to earn money for our community projects. 27. Dear Mr.Leonsis,

I’d love to send my warm greetings from Sweden to you!

I red about you for the first time last Sunday, April 18th 2010 in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, all thanks to my
17-year old son Robert. He always reeds the sports at first,
and he was so impressed of your 101-list that he exclaimed:
“Wow, Ted owns!” In Swedish slang it means “Ted is cool!”

I red this article as well, and I have to say that it was one of the best things I red all over my 42 years.
Thanks once again for the hapiness you radiate to people!

I do agree with what you tell here in the beginning of your blog, that events happening to us under our younger years
impact direction of our future life… I’m sure I’ve experienced the same thing: by some divine miracle, I’ve got another life here in Sweden at the age of 24. My dreams come true, I’ve a family and I work hard to embody some of my other dreams, too.

I’m thankful to you Mr.Leonsis, because you show to my son one important thing: you do not need to be en hard macho to get successful, it’s much easier to be a loving, happy, humble and wise person. I guess, that’s how a real mentor works.

I really need to ask you one confidential question, and I do hope to hear from you at my e-mail address. Thanks!

    Larissa

  28. Ted,
Reading your “To do” is certainly inspirational to me as a Third Ager. You have touched on issues of concern to many mindful mid-lifers and beyond: goal setting, financial security, spirituality, living a created life, leaving a legacy and having good fun. Congratulations on your new book.

As of today, one of my own “To dos” is to have a short interview with you in our “Midlife Interviews” series at http://www.happiness-after-midlife.com/midlife-interviews.html.

I look forward to hearing from you at dr.frank@happiness-after-midlife.com.

  29. ted if you have a momment, i would like to talk to you about a lange watch. let me know. thanks

  30. Ted,

I read your book and would enjoy hearing you speak!

Will you be in California in the near future?

  31. Ted,

you forgot one thing on the list, but you’ll never make it happen, so why bother, right?

Help Wiz win second championship – good luck! lmao

  32. wow, this is insane. I’m sure if you showed this list to people when you first wrote it they’d think you were a fool, but look at it now. Awfully Inspiring, and keep at it! go caps, lets bring a cup home!

  33. Hi Ted -

Years ago, when you first began ownership of the Caps and were still active at AOL, you spoke with me for about 30 minutes in the atrium at AOL. Thank You for doing that and coming on my radio show on WBZS back in the mid 90′s. Always enjoy going to Caps games. Your Bucket List has made me realize that All things are possible !! Cheers, Jonathan

  34. Mr. Leonsis,
Love the CAPS, & love your list. For a person to set out that many goals & accomplish so many of them is amazing & inspiring. Reading through your travel destinations & adventures, I noticed Tahiti. I was fortunate enough to visit French Polynesia and they are a beautiful set of islands. If you enjoyed swimming with dolphins, visit Bora Bora and you can swim with manta rays, dolphins & reef sharks all in the same outing. Thanks for helping turn around the city of DC through its sports teams. LETS GO CAPS!

  35. Thank you for sharing your list. I have one wish for my son. He is 22 and a great hockeyplayer. He grew up with hockey in Sweden and is 6’4″ and plays beautifully. My wish is for him to try out for your team!! He has the skills and he just needs the chance. We are currently living in Falls Church and he goes and practices in Arlington where your team practices. How do we go about getting him to try-outs? He says that you dont take people from the streets but those that have been playing in college teams and so on… Is that the ONLY way to get to try-out? Please help:)

    Cheers

    Vibeke

  36. Dear Ted Leonsis, Your dream for “To Do #33″ has arrived I am the designer of possibly the most beautiful, exciting, awe inspiring and sensuous hi rise in the world. This erection will last into perpetuity and is indispensible for history. Something like the Parthenon. But wait there is more. If you are “Good” there are more items to check off your list. Must contact me promptly because I am approaching other interested parties. This is phronesis with eureka. My name is Domenic Zarlenga. My e-mail is domeniczarlega3@yahoo.ca, at 12 St. Dennis Dr. Apt. 820, Toronto, ON M3C 1B2 Canada.
Actually you seem a pretty good guy, Domenic

  37. I just completed my own 101 list as of last night. It was fun and it really stretched me. I just heard about your story on Sunday night at a leadership function. I am living my life offensively and I have never been more excited! Thank you for setting an incredible example!

  39. Mr. Leonsis,

Thank you for the inspiration. I began a dream board for myself about two years ago and started one for my boys. They are many more dreams that can be created for me. Yet, I would ask one dream that I have not put on my board that I would like to ask you to help fulfill — to allow my singing group, Shades of Vision to sing the National Anthem at a Caps game! Let me know.

  40. Thank you for sharing this idea; you’ve inspired me to do the same. Go Caps!

  41. When I heard you wrote this, I was inspired to write my own! After looking at yours I see mine dreams are so different- in some ways so small, in other ways so creative. it’s a wonderful idea to do- to remind yourself you have things to hope for.

  42. Okay, you’ve said in interviews that winning a Stanley Cup is your ultimate goal. But when I review your 101 List, I see #41 as win a world championship. Given that you’re destined to own the Wizards at some point, it seems that that winning a world championship as an NBA owner would be acceptable to you. As a Caps season tix holder, that’s NOT acceptable to me. I’ve now had to watch my Caps be humiliated in a game 7 and that opposing team go on to win a Stanley Cup. If winning ANY world championship is your dream, then count me OUT. Winning a Stanley Cup should be on your 101 list, not just ANY world championship.

  46. Ted,

I have seen your list of things to do and obviously everyone’s list will reflect their individuality in its own way. However, as an entrepreneur myself, I am surprised that you don’t have more of your list dedicated to creating valuable solutions to existing problems. If I could get in a room with a guy like you I could achieve so much. Maybe I should that on my list: get into a room with Ted, convince him of my business model, get capital, create and run the greatest sports website ever… Does that count as one thing or four?

  47. I love your 101 list of things to do in your life time. It inspired me, except for some of the more expensive things. Good for you though!

I wondered where your spirituality played on this list? Its one of mine. Just curious.

For myself, I made a list of things not to do with before I die, but a list of things I want to do with my kids before they grew up because they all do grow up way too quickly. Some of the things are quite simple, but are important to me such as see a ballet, a Broadway play, go to a professional hockey, football and baseball game, visit and eat junk food at Coney Island, Eat in the Disney castle, visit the Treesort in Takilma Oregon, look for gems in a Gem Mine, go deep sea fishing and visit a sleeping volcano. Those types of things is also for me, but I want to see them through my child’s eyes.

  48. Ted, #63, I’m 52 and went to the Yankess’s fantasy camp a few yrs ago. For 6 days was treated as a “real” Yankee, but the best of all was 6 days of GREAT stories from the 25 – 30 old Yankee players. OK…could walk for a week after, but still had 6 wonderful days.

  49. I am thinking that with all of the business transactions that you have been involved in you could check off the “Swimming with sharks” : )

  50. Hi Ted! Just read your dream travel list: My husband John (of John Shorb Landscaping – does your garden -) and I are headed to Bali this summer (we bought the trip with another family at the Holton-Arms Auction). We will save you our “best of” list unless you beat us there. Thanks for the kind letter about John’s donation to the Shriver’s Best Buddies ball.
PS We have a great screenplay for you to read– coming your way soon. Cheers, Ellie and John

  51. Ted,
I read about you in The Hockey news, and started my own list.
    It’s such great idea!!

    Thanks Hayley

  54. This is a pretty impressive list I went to this list because you talked about it today at our Rotary club thank you for your comments today.
I was particularly impressed by your five principles and out of the that I thought the high level of self expression was the best, however empathy is probably the most important for me. By the way if you’re interested in checking off number 60. I can help with that. I have put together a golf tournament of Salvation Army for the last six years in the DC area and would like to invite you to come and play it last year was a pro-am next, year it will be a Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournament. I’d like to extend an invitation for you to come and be part of it. I want to thank you for your comments today and a lot to me I’m an avid sports fan and I appreciate the energy you put into this city. Last year I attended 98% of the wizards home games.

I have to tell you that I didn’t know what blog really meant I have spent most of my afternoon reading yours and I understand how you can do it everyday it seems to be a great way to express your thoughts, get them out of your mind and put them in print.

  55. Ted,

Very Nice article on TSN today about the Caps.
I though it was great that in the parting shot they mention you as a great owner.

Parting Shot: Ted Leonsis is the type of owner that every NHL team deserves. He is passionate about the game and completely dedicated to giving his team all the tools that they need to win. The team rewarded him last year with a division title, but he hopes that it’s just a sneak peak of what they can really accomplish. This is a young and exciting team that should continue to improve. Thanks in large part to Ovechkin, they have finally made some headway into the consciousness of sports fans in the DC area and should continue to win fans around the league.

  63. Given the stories about your enthusiasm for fine wines, I would have thought that one entry under possessions would have been to own or be an investor in a winery that gets a 90+ from Robert Parker! Look no farther than to an ex-IBM exec in Charlottesville that is on a road to that goal!

  64. Thats quite a list- a lot of those things i hope to accomplish. Which brings me to a boyhood dream of myn that i would like to check off- thats riding the zamboni. Do you think you could help me out?

  65. This morning I was trying to get a copy of your List of 101 Things and could not find it.
Please help. Wanted to show one of my best friends as it is an inspiration to us.

    Thanks

P.S. Would you be interested in purchasing a very large, beautifully framed Henri LeFort Engraving of Pres Washington, 1841, signed with eagle holding arrows surrounded by 13 stars watermark. LeFort is famous French engraver who engraved for Columbian Exposition in Chicago commemorating founding of America. Also one of his small engravings is in the Old Supreme Court in US Capitol.
Need to sale as my husband diagnosed with Schleroderma (terrible disease similar to Lupus). My husband is native American from San Felipe Pueblo (located halfway between Albuquerque and Santa Fe) We are relocating there to be near his parents (his father Robert Velasquez had been governor of their Tribe more than any other Tribal member and my husband is only child, only son.) My husband’s cousin is Notah Begay who roomed with Tiger Woods at Stanford. Anyway I have a wonderful family and want to help by selling one of my most precious possessions. I have collected George Washington historical engravings/pictures since moving here in 1989 and now its time for the next life transition..Have a great Friday- Regards Cis (Clarissa) Kuennen-Velasquez 571/309-5429
