One

As part of the team that worked on the Live 8 concert, and as an attendee of the event in London, I am proud to have received, and occasionally still wear, my white ONE bracelet.  The bracelet promotes unity and encourages support and justice for the poorest people in the world.

But today, that bracelet has an even bigger meaning to me, because, as I was reminded by an amazing article in the latest issue of National Geographic Magazine, we really are all one.

The article is well-written and tells the story of the spread of humanity across the face of the planet.  According to researchers, everyone on Earth today

The Czechs

As several of you pointed out – I made a mistake in listing the remaining four teams in the Men’s ice hockey competition.  They are Sweden, Finland, Russia, and the Czech Republic.  I had incorrectly identified the fourth team as Slovakia - apologies to the Czechs.

People in Glass Houses

I love watching the Winter Olympics.  The speed, strength, and grace of the athletes are truly impressive.  But one thing about the coverage that has really started to annoy me is the fact that so many of the commentators seem to be hyper-critical when they are reviewing various performances, particularly in the ice-skating events.

Among the worst offenders are the commentators who used to be competitors.  They’re using stop action photography, multiple camera angles, and HDTV to analyze and critique the performances

Alex the Great

Last night, Russia defeated Canada and knocked the defending gold medalists out of the Olympic tournament.  As always, Alex Ovechkin played a tough, high-energy game, and scored yet another goal.

Alex’s mother won two Olympic gold medals during her stellar basketball career, and I know that performing well in these games is a major goal for Alex, and so far he’s shown that the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree.  Congratulations Alex!

Poor NBC

NBC can’t possibly be happy with the fact that both the United States and Canada have been knocked out of the tournament.  I’m sure the medal games will feature some great hockey games, but I don’t see how a tournament that includes Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, and Finland is going to bring in real big ratings.
