School Starts For My Son

I am at UPenn with my family, moving my son into his dorm and attending new parents orientation. The energy on campus is highly charged. My son’s dorm is rocking and we will leave knowing he is in good hands and at a great university.

He has registered for all of his classes, bought his books and has moved into his dorm room. We have toured the important places to see. He has his banking set up and he knows where to eat. He has heard all of our parental lectures on safety and focus. He is on his own now and only a short Amtrak ride away from home and important games. :-) With Slingbox, Sony PlayStation, a laptop, an iPod and a Blackberry at his side, he has no excuse NOT to be connected to us and to home. And now a new chapter of our life starts.

Caps Radio Broadcasts Move to Bonneville

We are pleased that Bonneville bid so aggressively to work with us. They have a very powerful radio signal so our fans in a much greater footprint will hear our broadcasts. They have also agreed to a major cross promotion program with us on WTOP that can help us cross the chasm and reach a broader swath of potential customers. Our broadcasts will be heard on 1500 AM, 820 AM and 107.7 FM.

And when our fans can

I Support Tsongas Too

While a student at Georgetown University, my first job was as an intern for then Congressman Paul Tsongas (D) of the 5th district of Massachusetts. We were both Greek kids from Lowell, Massachusetts and Paul was a leader that I greatly admired.

He served well in Congress then became Senator of Massachusetts. He passed away at an early age and his congressional seat was then ably served by another close friend of mine, Marty Meehan, who recently took on the spot to become President of the University of Lowell. Paul’s wife, Niki, is now running for this seat and I believe she will be a great leader in Congress. She is smart, focused, dedicated to public service and will be a leader we all can be proud of. I have known her for more than 30 years and I am so proud that she is willing to serve the people of Lowell and the surrounding communities.

Mobile Posse

I have made a small angel investment in this cool new company, Mobile Posse. It is a company founded by Jon Jackson, a former AOL and MTV executive, and it too employs several AOL alumni. My good friend Jack Davies, founder of AOL International and a partner in our sports franchises, sits on their board. Raul Fernandez is also heavily involved.

The mobile ad space will be a hot one and Mobile Posse has first mover advantage and a very unique business model. There is a lot of activity in this space today in China and I am sure that service/utility type of advertising services will be welcomed by consumers and appreciated by carriers in the US.

Management Challenge

This is an amazing chart and what it says to me is that Google now has a classic management problem. It has a class of execs that have made a lot of money via stock option appreciation and a class of execs that are under water on their options or barely treading water compared to early on employees.

It is very difficult to keep old time employees motivated and it is hard to manage teams where one person, because of timing, made a lot of money while the exec sitting next to him or her didn

Go John Go

Kudos to John Borthwick for creating great value for his shareholders and investors with this acquisition of Fotolog. We are proud of you John. This is a great service with lots of customers. And when you can sell a company for 40 times its revenues, you know it has great user satisfaction and great upside.
