AOL Makes Big News

AOL is truly a media company now by moving its headquarters to NYC. As AOL in Dulles will continue to be a center of excellence for product, technology and network, the world’s biggest ad agencies are in NYC. It makes AOL the ONLY portal headquartered in the heart of the action. We all must remember that when AOL acquired Time Warner, it moved itself as a headquartered operation to NYC. And now it can evangelize the company’s lead in third party ad networks pivoted around Advertising.com and its set of recent acquisitions. The division will also be closer to TW headquarters and management in NYC can take a more day-to-day and active hands-on role in leading the company in conjunction with AOL leadership. The new media landscape is shifting towards a Web 2.0 distributed world. Portals, while still at scale, are challenged as to growth but I believe AOL had no choice but to reposition itself in this manner. As a shareholder and option holder, I am rooting for its success and am hoping to see it enjoy robust growth once again.

What a Day

Wow. Sunday should be a day of rest and family time yet yesterday was a day of high bandwidth sports viewing for me. My wife and daughter were busy with some activities so I was able to focus on a glorious autumn-like day on all sports all of the time.

The day started early. I did all of my email, blog postings, web surfing, and then reviewed some documents related to meetings for this week.  I then headed over to the Kettler Capitals Iceplex to see the practice. I spent some time talking with Alex Ovechkin, Michael Nylander, Victor Kozlov and Olie Kolzig. I also checked on some of our ticket sales programs and their results to date. I then went shopping for groceries to cook dinner for the family all while listening to pre-game NFL shows on the radio. I came home and jumped on the treadmill and ended up watching the Giants vs. Green Bay and Buffalo vs. Pittsburgh games. I did four miles in 60 minutes — 15 minute miles — set to 4 on the treadmill. I came upstairs, took a shower and then did some email and listened on the Caps website to our game in Carolina. I found my son online and linked him the game on radio. While we both listened, we IMed like crazy about the team and upcoming season. I then went back downstairs, and continued listening to the game on my wireless laptop while I was getting a massage from a therapist. During intermission, I put on the end of the golf match which Tiger Woods was clearly running away with and also toggled back and forth to watch game highlights of week two in the NFL. Then it was back upstairs to walk the dog; grill some chicken and steaks for the family; eat dinner; talk about the coming week and school; and then walk the dog again.  My wife and daughter then decided to watch the Emmys so it was back downstairs for me to watch the Pats cream the Chargers and the Yankees beat the Red Sox. Throw in some Dexter on Showtime and my day was complete. So I watched/listened to hockey, football, golf and baseball. Isn

Cringeworthy

I cringed when I read this news story.

I cringed when I read this news story. I have always said that to be a great team or continue to be a great team; so much has to go right. There has to be team chemistry; great coaching; good salary cap management; good health; luck; and some breaks with the refs. Everything went right for Anaheim last season but now they have two great players sitting on the fence about retirement; lost a player to restricted free agency; and a great free agent signing this off season gets hurt in the first exhibition game. Sports can be a cruel taskmaster and it puts so much adversity in front of you to overcome. All you can do is carry on. I pray for our good health as a team.
