Here is a group that is doing spectacular work in helping filmmakers get their message to the masses. We need to help and support young filmmakers. It takes on average 3.6 years for a documentary film to be produced and distributed. Since 1957, the entire documentary industry has only generated $ 2.0 billion in total worldwide box office. Think about that. In 50 years, every film produced and released has generated less than one quarter (90 days) worth of Google’s revenues. There are now 1,000 film festivals around the world and in the US, there are 355 public broadcast television outlets. We need to support these institutions to make sure the people’s voice is heard through this amazing media called film and to make sure the media becomes more and more relevant to a broadband enabled world.

  1. I too am concerned about the docu genre and the lack of a diversity of voices and distribution against the landscape of media congloms. But as a filmmaker, I’m also frustrated that the majority of support of this nature tends to be limited to non-fiction film (docu). If folks hadn’t bolstered fiction writers and artists in the past, then we might have lost out on the likes of Shakespeare, classic poets, painters… the list goes on. So it is for fiction filmmakers. As people embrace the idea of filmanthropy, it is my hope that the idea will be applied across genres, causes and countries.

  2. Hi Ted, given that I was told at our most recent Halloween party that I resemble you to some degree (I didnt dress up), I thought I would look you up. Sorry, being from the DC area, I should have known who you are.Naturely I’m very embarrassed but given I’m a Redkins and Orioles fan and not so much Basketball or Hockey it is plausible. Once again my apologies. Is there any future events in the works for an MMA promotion in the DC area? I notice that Mark Cuban is entering the fray in MMA events now. I would love to see a UFC type event locally. In fact I would love to see “The Fight Network” in the USA. It’s a Canadian Network that has taken Canada by storm and is presently being presented worldwide on the internet and on cable systems throughout Canada. This will be the next big thing in my opinion. Thanks—Gary
