After watching the first two periods of the Caps game, I was in a foul mood. And then I went to the Police concert with some close friends. The show was a good one but NOT a great one. When Sting allowed the show to be about The Police – about a band – it soared. But when he decided that it was a show about Sting and his spin on his older songs, I got bored. I was disappointed in Roxanne, one of the great songs of my youth as an example. There is no need to add value to a legendary song. To be harsh, that song sounded like a cover band was performing it. Sting is sometimes "too cool for school" and at times this show looked like a way for him to give back and allow the other band members – who now look like they should be working in a law office in Tysons Corner – some money and some fame. Sting is buff in that old-man-doing-Yoga kind of way. He has great charisma but sometimes seems detached from his own music. The Police were one of the seminal bands to me of the late 70′s and early 80′s. Their music is like a soundtrack of my life and the show last night didn’t move the agenda along for me. It was fun to see them but it really looks like Sting is hoping for the tour to end so he can go back to making solo jazz-inspired music
