I have been watching this case very closely as it represents a real issue that social networks, email and instant messaging can create. In a world of secret identities and multiple IP addresses and web-based email accounts, we all have to be careful about what is being transmitted across the internet. This is such a sad story for a young girl to take her own life because another young woman and her mother impersonated a young boy and then cyber bullied the young girl who eventually committed suicide. The laws will now change in the US. Cyber bullying will be regarded no differently than physical bullying or making threatening crank telephone calls. This case will be seen as a landmark case. My bet is this non charge will change everything as there will be true outrage by communities of interest and law enforcement officials. On a personal note, my name has been impersonated online just within the last two weeks on the Washington Post blog. I have received threats and very dark and not well-intentioned emails. We will all have to conduct ourselves with more decorum and with more social awareness. Cyber bullying is real issue. Keyboard courage is prevalent but in this most sad case, a young woman took her own life and this fact will now change the laws in our country.
