He's been toiling in the minors for so long, he deserved the chance, especially since it was obvious at the end of last season that Hanlon wasn't the guy to lead the team. His attitude is something I cannot remember seeing in my almost 20 years following this team; a coach who sees anything less than a championship a failure.
