It Wasn’t Who Wasn’t There: It Was Who Was There

We were missing Pothier, Semin, Clark, Johnson and Poti from the lineup today. We could have felt sorry for ourselves. After going down 2 to 0, we could have shut it down on the road at Montreal.

But we had Ovechkin (twice), Backstrom, Gordon and Green – all young players; all first round picks; all goal scorers who showed perseverance, strength and will of purpose – to win 5 to 4 in overtime. This was a good way to pick up two points and a really gritty victory for the good guys. The team has to feel good about itself after a great road win like that. Now home for a few days to rest and then take on the Avalanche at home on Wednesday. Go Caps!

  1. Great game. They are playing a lot like the Hershey Bears play, and you can see streaks of that dominating possession style here and there. I always loved Hanlon, and I thought he was a class act. The new coach really has seemed to light a fire under their asses, and all with Clarky out. Can’t wait until he returns.

  2. Ted,

About the schedule, it seems like there are less weekend games this year. Is that the case? Can we get more on the weekend? Also, any chance of pushing evening games back to 7:30pm? That extra half hour would really help!

    Thanks

  3. Mike says:

“If Olie can start playing better, we will be dangerous.”

Godzilla kept us in that game if you might not have noticed..

What I like about ‘Ollie’ is that if it wasn’t against the rules to use your stick on anyone daring to enter his crease, he’d be breaking three sticks a game… until eveyone got the message…

“I am Godzilla, and I will crush you lowly humans…”

  4. Great effort. There was a time not too long ago where once we got behind, we were done….not any longer. These guys work hard and it pays off. Now we need consistent goal tending. GO CAPS!

  5. To echo and build on what Mike said, on this 5 game homestand, if we get 9-10 points, we’ll be in good shape.

Mr. Leonsis, can you please sign Ovie soon so Larry Brooks and the rest can stop slobbering over him?

  6. Great effort and win for the Caps. This team is finally pulling it together and heading in the right direction.

Caps need to get Ovechkin signed as with each passing day this is gonna become more and more of a distraction for the team and him.

We need NO distractions to keep this moving in the right direction. I have to give props to the Pens for getting their Superstar signed. Caps need to pony up and get this done way before RFA offers come a calling.

Let him and us the fans know just how committed you/Caps are to putting a A-1 product on the ice.

  7. Really great win. Slightly off topic, but do you have any idea when FIOS might be getting the NHL network? Verizon is making such a big push to build that it’d be nice to see the addition.

  8. PLEASE get Ovechkins name on the dotted line.. I’m an older guy and I have even made the trek down from Baltimore to see the Caps.. The Reason.. Ovechkin.. He is worth the price!! It has been painful the last few years watching all the losses and it would be that much more painful seeing this team finally turn the corner, only to lose Ovechkin.. Make it happen!!

  9. Owning the team probably gives you the prerogative to use the pronoun “we”… but, well, that first paragraph kinda makes it sound like you were out there on the ice with the boys. ;)

  10. It was a terrific victory, and demonstration of the team’s determination – something they’ve been proving repeatedly since the turn-around that accompanied the coaching change. The Caps now have the competitors and coaches – and they’ve always had the management support – to be contenders; it will get easier to win the tough close games if they can just get everybody healthy.

  11. Now the Deadskins are gone, hopefully we have big post football boost in attendance. These boys need our support for this 5 game homestand. If we could get 7-8 points, it would be crucial.

Ted, the rebuild is reeping rewards. Green, Backs, and Ovie are cornerstone players we should have for A LONG TIME. Bring up Alzner in a year or 2 and we have 4 great players.

If Olie can start playing better, we will be dangerous. Also, I’ll just hope that 1 of Semin/Kozlov wake up..because our offense would get even scarier.

  12. GO CAPS!

Please Mr. Ted, try to sign our young star promises for a long time: Alex, Mike Green, Nicklas. Washington will become a hockey town with these, as they’ll win big :)

  13. Awesome Game, maybe even BenaDict-nati will begin to notice…

Ted, Look.. 2nd Habs goal by Kostitson…. BenaDict: “Dazzling Goal”, followed by “It was a Thing of Beauty”…. (just for good measure, obviously)

Let’s Say you are a Big Executive with AOL… and your spokesman is selling AOL to a huge crowd of consumers..

and your spokesman blurts out “oh, Dazzling New Feature” (that the competition has, or implemented), followed up by “It’s a Thing of Beauty” (your know your competitions product)

As like Director of Marketing, exactly how long would that ‘spokesman’ last? I am very serious about this, not only do I take great offense as a Caps fan to him coming into ‘my living room’ taunting me, but he earns $$$ from me watching the game indirectly….

Are we trying to build a ‘Brand’ with the Caps? Are we marketing season tickets to the next generation of kids who are watching the Caps play?

Kids look for heroes, and are drawn to winners…. BenaDict-nati promotes verbally other teams, and their individual players in a very, very overt way….

If he were some national announcer, who called a Caps game every now and again, whatever…. He is our voice… and his entire mindset is that the Caps are a freaking wannabe bunch of losers, who happen to be playing against every other team in the league that is better than us……

You may be thinking, oh, he’s fair, and a big hockey fan, and it carries over….

This is hockey…. from watching the officiating, I don’t think it’s ever been a fair game, and guess what… good guys finish last… and it’s been showing for a couple of seasons now….

The coaching change brought a new winning attitude to the players, a play by play announcer change, might just bring a Freaking winning attitude to the fans!
