I had a very interesting phone call with a senior level executive at a NHL team who said to me, "Can you believe that you drafted Alex Ovechkin, Jeff Schultz and Mike Green in the same year at the draft in 2004?" He told me that several GMs had to explain why they didn’t pick Schultz with the 27th pick in the draft or Mike Green, who leads all NHL D men in goals, with the 29th pick in the draft. Mark Fistric, D of Dallas, was picked one spot before Mike Green in case you were wondering. Both Schultz and Green were noted by this exec to be top 4 D men in the NHL for many, many years to come. It was nice to participate in a call like that and that sure was a productive draft for us. And I guess that first pick of Alex Ovechkin turned out OK too.
Don’t forget, there were some fans who were angry with us drafting Green ans Schultz.
One such “fan” even went as far to say that Sarge would be the biggest draft bust of McPhee’s career.
The future looks great on the D with Schultz, Green, Morrisson and Alzner (who projects to be a top 4 d-man in the NHL next year at 19.) Oh, and there’s that Poti guy who’s pretty good and Pothier who’s got some talent…
Cool stuff Ted.
Both need to improve obviously, but the future’s bright!
Playoff experience will be very valuable to this team.
