Emails And More Emails

Wow. Did I ever get a lot of emails over the last 48 hours. Here is a sampling without any commentary from me. We have a very diverse group of fans and requests, don

  1. To the fan who can’t go because of a young baby… I’ve brought my young babes before, managed to change their diapers and nurse during the game and now will be bringing a 2 day old up to the nosebleed section during the game against the Panthers which will be a jam packed fan appreciation game. I think you can swing it too. Go Caps!!

  2. I echo the sentiments of NewYorkCapsFan….Olie has been the backbone of this organization for years…has been a top-notch goaltender for years…and if he believes he can still contribute to this organization…he probably can. And I’m sure management will give him the benefit of the doubt, within reason.

He’s deserved at least that much.

  3. Hey Ted, don’t these people know there are more important things than Olie Kolzig playing or not that you have to solve:

    - The ketchup packets/pump debate

    - The fact that the box office isn’t open at 3:20 AM (why the heck is someone taking a walk through DC at 3:20 AM in the middle of winter?)

    - The musicanship of Brooks Laich and Mike Green…

To the folks who want a “Long time Caps fan” section…do what I do: have a season ticket holder plan…I’ve had once since 1985 and I’ve never had a problem getting a seat. Really, even in the playoffs! :)

Oh and about Olie and other who plays/doesn’t play…Bruce has done a pretty damn good job picking line ups and such so far since he started with the team, I think I’ll trust his judgement.

  4. Hey, I didn’t know you take Birthday requests! I’ll be sure to put mine in here soon.

    ;-)

  5. Have Caps take turns reading some of these on the big screen during intermission…like Letterman’s Viewer Mail. Then have someone like Dennis Leary or Henry Rollins read your response. :-D

  6. I remember watching Kolzig when he was just a bench warmer, standing behind Al Koken, leaning against the boards and eating a hot dog just for some TV time. That was so many years ago and in that time he has matured into one of the classiest acts in the NHL. He has not only dealt with family challenges associated with his autistic son, but he has gone a step further in using his celebrity status to reach out and help autistic children everywhere. He has given unselfishly of his leadership to his team and given so much to his community. Fans have NEVER received less than 100% of his effort and expectations that someone will win every game, every night are unrealistic. When interviewed after the acquisition of Huet, he was all class, talking about what a great benefit this would be for the team in their hunt for the playoffs. And after Huet’s first shutout as a Capital, Kolzig warmly (and genuinely came out to congratuate him). So to hear fans boo him or ask for the Capitals to send him to Hershey displays a total lack of class. We owe Kolzig the same level of class, commitment and respect that he has given to this organization — and its fans — for all these years.

  7. I’d like to echo how much I love this feature. It makes me understand why and how some of the inept leaders in this great democracy of ours get elected. LETS GO CAPS!!!!

  8. Ted, this is crazy! Now, since I agree with you, can I watch the game in your owner’s box so I can bring my dog and my kids can play with slot cars during the game? LOL!!!!

And I get irritated when 12 year old kids ask me to buy them strawberry flavored philly blunts at the gas station. I guess when you own a sports franchise, people stop begging you for quarters and start begging for bigger things, thinking those bigger things are only quarters to you.

  9. Ted – can I borrow your ride? My car doesn’t have any gas.

Kolzig has blown several (10+) games this season, while I can only think of one in which his play was the reason why we won.

Please stop the charade. Kolzig’s time as the #1 is over.

  10. You must get a lot of laughs out of your emails. And I’m betting you’re cleaning up the spelling for a lot of those emailers before you post them for us to read!

If people are coming to games solely to see one player or the other, then they aren’t true Caps fans but merely fans of a particular player. Let ‘em follow soccer where that kind of loyalty is the rule rather than the exception.

  11. People who want Kolzig to start based on his past achievements are idiots – pro sports is a cut-throat industry and the management and coaches need to be putting out the players who they think are most likely to win games.

People who want to kick Kolzig to the curb are idiots too – he was a very good goalie for a very long time, was a leader and contributed positively to the community. His only flaw at this point is that he’s human and as a human who’s getting older his physical skills are diminishing. It’s not like he’s trying to sabatoge the team.

Of course, there is a middle ground. You can be appreciative of all that Kolzig has done in the past while still realizing he is not longer an elite goalie and that the team may need to move forward with someone else.

  12. AND 40yrs later you hear from me and invite me to the Verizon Center. Your one of the good guys! Thanks

  13. Great stuff!!!! It is scary if some of these e-mails are actually serious.

Thanks for sharing these with us Ted, i certainly got a good laugh

  14. Unreal. The fact that you are still so accessible amazes me. I know I have shaken your hand on every level of Verizon Center. Thanks for not putting all of us in this group and still interacting with the fans.

  15. Ted, I am speechless. But I am also cracking up, this is sheer insanity. I have my friends reading your blog, who aren’t really Caps fans but they love these emails you show.

  16. I laugh everytime I read your email section, it’s the Best!!! But all joking aside, Ted could you get Bruce to arrange the first line so Kozlov would pass the puck to Semin before he sets up Ovie for the one timer as they are all on my fantasy team. Of course I’m joking…unless you’ll do it. HA. Go Caps!!

  17. Are these people writing to you, Ted, or to God himself? Because apparently you have the power of the almighty to take care of it all… you should do a movie about you called “Ted Almighty!” See you tomorrow night against the B’s!

  18. I hear someone chanting Olie Sucks, and you’ll hear me chant “Shut Your Mouth”!

Talk about ingrates. Except for Poti and Pothier (when will he ever play again?) the Caps defense is what three years away from Hershey Bears uniforms?

We needed to pick up two solid defensemen for the playoff run. Easily a couple of our rookies could use another year in Hershey.

Huet played a great game against NJ, but so did the entire team. He faced one big break away… It’s routine for Olie to get at least three odd man rushes a game… He doesn’t need the drill in practice…. it’s every game.

Criticizing Olie is like cussing the fireman, for not being able to put out the fires, while the critics ignore the arsonists!

  19. Are they really serious? My God, this is highly disturbing! My prayers are with you :)

  20. This has become my favourite “Ted’s Take” regular feature.

It amazes me that some of these people actually believe you will honor their requests.

I know this is a price you pay for being the most accessible sports team owner, but thank you for continuing despite the numerous “unique” requests.

  21. While some are pretty scary I have to wonder how many are for real and how many are just made up to get on Ted’s “crazy mail” list.

  22. Oh my gosh…I relly feel bad for you sometimes. I don’t even know how you deal with some of these people…amazing! ridiculous! This just shows me that we really are a society of entitlement…everyone is always looking to get something for free! If you want good seats to the game buy season tickets!!! There are a million plans to choose from and a power pay option!

  23. I don’t know whether to laugh, cry or be very, very scared. To think that these are some of the people I may be sitting near at Caps games is very disturbing. Thanks for sharing, I think.
