Thank You

I have received some very nice emails yesterday and today – more than 60 of them since Sunday night – from season ticket holders and long distance fans. The emails have been supportive and funny and insightful. I have to say that I really appreciate the nice gestures and good will after two tough losses this weekend.

The consensus Top 10 messages contained within your emails are as follows:1. Keep on the course we have set. The plan will work.2. The fan base believes in the young players.3. Don

  1. Ted, I agree with most of the points in your summary, especially about Backstrom. I have been a hockey player and fan since the 1970s when I grew up in the Boston area with Bobby Orr and the Bruins. I am a Caps season ticket holder and I have been VERY impressed with Backstrom’s play this season. He has gotten better and better as the season has progressed, and he is a future star. When you watch him play, it is hard to believe he is a rookie, given his poise with the puck and great playmaking. He is also strong in the defensive zone, and he was where he was supposed to be when the bad-luck goal happened. We all make mistakes; it was just unfortunate that his was on national TV! I hope Ovie and the other guys joke about it with him so he can quickly forget it and not let it bother him. None of the fans hold it against him (though I AM unhappy with Donald about his stupid roughing penalty that cost them the Boston game).

A couple of other suggestions for the Caps:

    1. I disagree with people who say that we need more strength on the blue line. I think we have a wealth of talent on defense, and they are only getting better with experience, especially Green and Shultz. Morrison is also VERY solid, and so is Potie. We are also strong at center, with Backstrom and Nylander. What we DO need is a big power wing who can plant himself in front of the net and score lots of garbage goals on rebounds. The other teams seem to score on rebounds all the time, and we rarely do. I thought that was the story of the game on Sunday.

    2. The Caps need to dominate at home more, especially on the weekends. It seems that they seem to lose more on big weekend games, when we have big enthusiatic crowds, and then win the weekday games. This is bad for fan morale (and future attendance).

    3. Best way to shut up the opposing team fans in our building is to BEAT THE OTHER TEAMS, like we did against Boston.

  2. Hi Ted,

Just a note…I think we should all be excited and happy that the plan is working! Even if we don’t make the playoffs this year just look at the stands..more and more fans are coming out. I know we haven’t gotten to the point where we drive the Pens fans but we’re still doing well. Not only that but I’ve gone on a couple of trips with the Caps Road Crew and there are a lot of people who are getting excited about this team! Let’s all keep the faith we’re learning that killer instinct that you’re talking about!

  3. This Capitals team has heart and will not let two unfortunate games end their season. While we’re not in as an advantageous position as before this past weekend, we have 12 games left to turn things around, and if any team can do it, this is that team. As special note to Backstrom…you have led this team, and the NHL throughout the year and one mistake (which only confirms that you are as human as the rest of us) will not make or break this season. You have given it your all throughout the season and Washington Capitals fans are as strongly behind you today as they were before the start of the Penguins game. GO CAPS, and let’s start that movement up the standings ladder!

  4. This team can still make it. We have two games against Carolina and a game at hand.

Caps played hard and deserved two wins this weekend. As long as they continue to persevere and stay positive i believe we can still not only make playoffs but win S.E. division. You made great pickups at the deadline. Haven’t been this excited about the Caps in a long time. Everything will pay off soon enough. Go Caps!!

  5. Huet played his heart out yesterday and made some spectacular saves (and is only 33). The only sad thing is that if we resign him, it makes it very hard to keep Olie, who deserves to retire a Cap.

Backstrom will be fine. Resigning Mike Green is the top priority on this team. Ted, please get this deal done.

  6. These past two games were tough, it definitely put a damper on the weekend. Some hometown refs and a “phantom” goal for Crosby tends to do that though. It was it is, and as a true Caps fan I know that this team has what it takes to win a few straight and continue their push. I’m not concerned with our team at all…however I will be rooting harder than ever before against Carolina/Philly/Buffalo and all others who stand in the Caps’ way.
