This is a great idea and a welcomed program for the homeless. Check it out.

I came up with a model for third world countries that could be used for the homeless coumminity as well. In my model each person would possess his or her own SIMc card (Subscriber Identification Module or Subscriber Identity Module) card – a.k.a. “smart card” – which holds all of a subscriber’s personal information and phone settings. It also holds the phone number, personal security key and other data necessary for the handset to function. Since the the card can be switched from phone to phone, the expensive hardware could be shared and/or rented similar to a flex/zip car model by a nonprofit or local business. Think it might work?
This is great. Google’s corporate culture of seeking to do good, is a much needed thing in today’s “bottom-line” corporate environment. Google gets that we all live in one world, and all benefit when we do stuff like this.
