SI on Alex And His Assault on 60 Goals…

Here is a good piece on Alex Ovechkin. The great thing about Alex is that he would trade in all of the individual stats to make the playoffs this year. I have never once heard Alex mention personal records only team metrics.

I am sure Alex would trade all the goals in if it meant a play-off berth.

It was an interesting piece, esp. with what Wils had to say about Alex. He is right that the Caps haven’t made the playoffs yet with him (in fact, they’ve made the playoffs only once since he left DC). I am sure, though that when the Caps make the playoffs (hopefully this year!) Alex will be leading the way. :)

It’s easy for any athlete to say the right thing to the media while hiding his true feelings. I have never doubted Ovie as a teammate for one second. But since actions speak louder than words all you have to do is look at the empty netter vs. Nashville. Ovie got the puck and looked straight down the center of the ice at the open goal. Rather than shoot to try and pad his stats, he realized he was risking an icing call and a defensive zone face off. So instead of shooting it, he tried to rag the remaining seconds off the clock by dumping the puck off the boards to have time expire as Nashville chased the biscuit down the ice. That the puck happend to bank off the boards into the empty net was instant karma for Ovie’s unselfish play. Best player in the league bar none.
