Frank works for the Washington Post. He is a good man. He is my friend on Facebook too. But Frank, you still don’t get it. And it seems your skin is a little thin, huh?  It was a lockout NOT a strike. The owners locked out the players. They are now our partners. We got our economic model right-sized. Something newspaper will have to do as you have been doing on an annual basis. Layoffs. Cost cuts. Buyouts. Sound familiar? The NHL has now had three straight years of revenue, attendance and ratings growth. Our key employees – the players – have seen the salary cap grow from $39 million to perhaps $54 million per team next year. What kind of salary increases are you seeing? The employees receive almost 55 percent of every revenue dollar. As we grow so does the salary cap. NHL franchise values are up a lot. Most newspaper stocks are way down with frustrated shareholders fighting to take over the companies to reinvent them. Odd as it sounds, the NHL is considered a growth stock by the banking community. They don’t see newspapers in that same light. And yes, the Washington Post is always telling us how to run our franchises. That is your job but it should be OK for me to opine on your business too. I am a blogger and that is why blogs are made. If you don’t understand my blog post and suggestions, you know what they say, "If you don’t get it, you don’t get it."

  1. Comcast+ (at least in MD) has screwed up tonite and the game is not showing up on Howard, Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties (at least those). We’ve called multiple times and they have no clue what’s going on. One person even said “what are the Caps?” If OVie scores 60 tonite, we will be irate.

  2. By the way. I watch the NHL Network every morning and night to see the highlights of all the games since they don’t show them all on tv. I could care less about the NBA or NFL. In DC, I watch for traffic news, and hockey.

There’s nothing like waking up and turning on the tv to hockey, hockey, hockey.

I also read the newspaper, but ONLINE. The only time I bought the paper was when I was featured in it last year. Reading news online as it happens, wow I could never do that with a newspaper…. why should I buy the paper?

  3. But for USA Today which has seen its circulation increase, newspapers haven’t changed their business models for 100 years.

Editor and Publisher reports that the top 20 papers in the U.S. have lost a collective 1.4 million copies in daily circulation.

What is truly amazing is that the past 10 years couldn’t have been a better time for the WP have some (any) vision.

    What a collosal failure.

I am sure that some at the post have considered most of the 10 points (If you haven’t jump on 1 & 9).

As we all know, execution is what it is all about. Execution requires hunger and purpose.

I just don’t see any real motiation for this fat, fed and happy good old boys club of the WP to change anytime soon.

  4. Well said. I’m so tired of the perception that the NHL/hockey is unappealing. It might be to the person who says, “I don’t like hockey” and if that’s the case, your loss. But the league and the teams aren’t struggling. They’re making it work – or at the very least, trying new things out to make it work. I’m a simple fan and I can see that. People want the product. Meanwhile, Trib Co announces $78 mil in quarterly losses. Talk about reshuffling chairs on he deck of the Titanic. Unbelievable.

  5. I enjoyed the comment Mr. Leonsis and the blog as a whole. I am entirely sick of the MSM taking potshots at the NHL with no actual knowledge of the sport. This adverse relationship that the NHL has with the MSM has become almost an epidemic that I feel the league needs to address in the near future. Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on this manner?

I just want to note as well, I am not a Caps fan, but they have become my #2 team due to the exciting team you’ve put on the ice and the attitude of the organization off of it. I can only wish that the team I follow does as much with the fans/city as the Caps do.

    Keep it up!

    Thanks.

    Chris
