Here is a good thought piece on an issue that is being debated around the NHL mostly be media folks. We shouldn’t address it because we are focused on team-related accomplishments. We have seven games left to play all against division rivals. We are two points out of a playoff spot. Florida is a hot team and is right behind us. Carolina keeps on winning. All of our focus needs to be on the next seven games, four on the road and three at home. After the regular season ends, we can debate issues such as this one.
Corey mentions some great candidates: Lidstrom, Brodeur, Iginla, and Malkin. I’ll take any of them on my team any day. Personally, my choice, right now is Lidstrom in that he is the best defenseman in the league, and when he got hurt, it coincided with Detroit going into a bit of free-fall.
Malkin is an interesting choice, but he was only MVP while Sid was out…
If I had to pick an MVP other than Alex, it’d be Iggy. Without him, Calgary would be fighting with Edmonton for a draft choice.
Still, in reality, Alex is the MVP this year, playoffs or not. He will win the Ross trophy, the Richard Trophy, and likely the Lester Pearson award (voted on by the players association as to who they think is the best player in the league.)
We shall see what happens.
If there’s one player on a team whose absence significantly changes the performance of the team for the worse, that’s the Most Valuable Player for the team. You look around the league, compare the MVPs of the individual teams with one another, look at their supporting casts and the impact of that player compared to the rest of the team, and voila, you have the league MVP. In a perfect world. Which this isn’t.
No offense to the other Caps players who are having great years (Green, Backstrom, Laich, et al), but without A.O., we’re not in contention for the playoffs.
