Another reason to chuckle at the so-called experts.

He also lists Ovie as a RW.
Last time I checked MVP stood for Most Vaulable Player. PERIOD. Not MVP for the team with the best record. To me that means the player that helps his team win and perform beyond their maximum potential. But what do I know? I don’t write for some hotshot Canadian newspaper..
If he makes this argument, then no one will win the Calder Trophy, because Kane and Backstrom and even Enstrom are not eligible because they are on current non-playoff teams.
It’s just a weak argument.
The chap makes some sense in one or two of his comments. A great argument for Lidstrom as the MVP can be made since the Wings went into a slump when he was out of the line-up and then resumed their tearing up the league when he returned. I still think Alex should be the MVP, but who knows?
The rookie race…he’s right, Toews and Backstrom are both terrific and will be for a very long time. In a typical season either would be running away with the award…hell, in a typical season, Patrick Kane of the Hawks would win. It’s kinda like two years ago when Sid, Dion and Alex were all rookies…. in a normal year, any of them would have won it.
Of course, then I read further when he talked about executive of the year and gave the nod to Brian Burke in Anaheim. Now Burke did a great job, but he cites being able to maintain excellence with personnel changing all the time. Uh… that would be more like Lou Lamorello in New Jersey? And he didn’t even mention Lou.
Ovie as honourable mention????
They should revoke that guy’s credentials immediately.
The player awards are about the players stats not about how the team does.. I believe that Damien Cox wants Jonathan Toews, C, Chicago to win rookie of the year because he is has a crush on him and isnt looking at the stats. Nicklas Backstrom is in the # 1 spot for a reason because he is # 1. America is a free country & Damien Cox can have his own opinion but it is wrong.
What is up with everyone hating the caps? It seams we can’t be judged without someones thumb on the scale! what kind of logic is this Toews because “he looks better” despite the numbers but Ovechkin would not be concidered because of team numbers despite his personal numbers and the fact that people fill the seats in every arena in the league to get to watch him do his magic. What about Backstrom’s back to back goals to win from behind on Friday night? Is the world not ready for the Capitals as a new empire in the NHL? WE are like the redheaded step child of the league. Hell Ciderella had it good! Like Cameron in Ferris Beuller who sent the farrari through the window so his Dad would have to deal with him. We will have to step up and win the cup for the world to see the Caps as they truely are! Ted keep doing what you do!
Everytime I read a story about who should win the respective trophies, especially the Hart I honestly wonder if i’ve been watching a completely different league this season then these journalists. They all seem to be pushing the same idea, Ovechkin doesn’t deserve the Hart because we aren’t a top of the league team. Either that or they try to make it seem that he isn’t really as good as he is. I have seen some impressive players this season, but Ovechkin has taken the cake. He’s gone crazy this season and has carries our team. He scores just about half of our points and if it weren’t for him, we probably would not even be able to say that the playoffs could still happen. People say someone like Malkin should win for stepping up when Crosby was gone, or Lidstrom for his play. Those players are members of teams who would still be successful without them. As much as I hate to admit it, the Pens have a solid team. A player like Crosby can get injured and its no big deal, they have the talent to recover. Someone else will step in and take over, thats what Malkin did. If he got injured someone else would have done it. With the Red Wings it is the same thing, all their players are excellent, so no one can say that their play alone was spectacular. The most valuable player should go to who ever showed the most impressive single performance out of all the players in the league. Someone who did it by himself and would still have accomplished that regardless of who else plays on the team. Ovechkin probably would have still scored 50 or more if he were playing with traffic cones on the team. I’m not saying that Caps aren’t good, we are a good team, we’re just not the Red Wings. Ovechkin has shown brilliance and his ability to lead the league without the support of other superstars. Not to mention he deserves for shear love and passion for the team and the game. He would probably decline the award if it meant we got to the playoffs. Likewise he would give all his goals to Kolzig for that 8th spot. He deserves the Hart because he embodies everything that makes the game great. Unfortunately everyone else seems to be blind at his performance this season and would likely want to give the award to Crosby and make up some story about how his injury makes the team better or something and therefore he is great. Its sad that I feel like i’ve been reading Emerson this season while the media have been reading Anne Coulter or something. Its a shame, they should wake up and see real talent and a player who truly is a class above everyone else.
Undoubtedly, the sports writers want something else to talk about as the playoffs proceed.
i.e. if the MVP were on a team not in the playoffs… it is one less thing for them to babble about.
It’s not about the MVP Ted, it’s about them, the talking heads…
This guy is NOT an expert unless you consider it the sum of its parts – a “has been (ex)” and a “drip under pressure (spurt).”
I thought they had an MVP for the playoffs trophy and it was separate from the Hart. I guess you can win the Hart and exit the playoffs in the first round and that’s okay.
When the Caps win the Cup, you will need to invite all these kind of people to the victory parade.
Let’s go Caps!!
I guess you either agree or disagree with the basic argument – can you have an MVP from a team that doesn’t make the play-offs??
I think the counter argument would simply be “what’s the difference if one team gets in with 92pts and the Caps don’t with 91pts. Somehow that means AO doesn’t qualify???
If the Caps finished last in the league, I could see his point, but not when they’ve been in the thick of the race for the second half of the season.
