Here is a good blog post from Puckhead’s Thoughts. It is an emotional time. This morning when I woke up and signed on, I had a bunch of emails from Caps fans. Some were sent to me between the second and third period intermission. I wish I could republish some of the comments but that would be bad form. I always wonder why some fans will be so harsh in email to me during a game. I am on your side. I bleed along side you. I share your joy and pain. It is incredible to see the venom and anger and angst that some fans will heap on us when we are down 3 to 1 in an important game. It is even sadder when we rally and play such a great third period and win the game 5 to 3. And then we don
If you think your inbox looked bad, Ted, you should have seen the game day thread on the message boards. There were some who were writing off the entire season based on a down second period. While I can appreciate passionate fans who live and die on every shift, several chill pills would have been in order on Friday night.
Next up: our biggest game of the year, again. Best of luck to the Caps on Tuesday night, and here’s hoping we can solve the Hurricanes when it counts.
Might this game represent a turning point for Backstrom as a goal scorer? That wrister to tie the game was easily the best shot he has gotten off all year. He has skills that he hasn’t really featured yet.
LOL Some of us didn’t send the email until after the end of the 3rd… and the email was in a more congratulatory tone.
LETS GO CAPS!!
I second the sentiment. Stop being fair-weather fans. Just because you have access to the owner doensn’t give you the right to bash him every five minutes. Every team we play wants to win too, its called SPORTS!!! Support the team, try to understand that they feel bad too, don’t heap on when its going tough, and start having a little more faith and patience. These are very young guys, many of them, and they can’t win every single game 8-0. You have an owner, who like him or not, talks to you, listens to you, explains himself, and has given you everything you asked for this year. At some point, it is up to the players to go out and perform, and it might mean something to them if you actually supported them when things were tough instead of whining. Think about it.
You are the best owner in sports. We love you!!
Mr. Leonsis:
I agree that we shouldn’t fill your email with rants. I also actually felt that had Kari Lehtonen not played super for the first 50 minutes last night the score would have been 3-3 at the end of the second and 5-3 5 minutes before it was. That said I have a bit of a “rant” to share.
In post game commentary, Comcast and Lisa Hillary openly criticisezed the Caps play the first two periods event thought statistically the Caps outshot and outhit the Thrashers every period except the third when the Thrashers outhit them while the Caps outshot them 23-2. For that I say, figuratively to Ms. Hillary – “off with your head” and ask you to pull her image from the Caps Website. Please get someone else to plug 2008-2009 season tickets. Thanks for the great season & LETS GO CAPS!!!!
Yes the game last night was a Emotional Roller Coaster ride. It was a great win and the Caps as a whole have done a great job all season.
Thanks!!
That was an incredible comeback, the most exciting 3rd period I have ever seen! I for one, want to thank you (and George) for all you’ve done for the team. The strategy of growing the young players is working, stay the course. I’ve got a feeling that we are in for a magical ride these last 6 games.
I think that I speak for most CAPS fans when I say – you have done a terrific job. You recognized that we needed a change and you made it. We’ve got hope for the post season, and the future is so bright, I need sunglasses!
I look forward to reading your blog – very diverse.
Hey Ted
I am a new fan to hockey and the Caps. Friends brought me to a game a few weeks ago and I had such a good time I just kicked in my share for season tickets (the rest of the year and next season too!).
Keep up the great work and Let’s Go CAPs!
-Merlin
God bless you Mr. Leonsis. Thank you for signing Alex for thirteen years (that number still boggles my mind). Whatever happens this year I know we will win the cup before his time is up. Last night was awesome. #8 is, hands down, MVP. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Ted!!! And congratulations! Although I may have to call on you if I’m suddenly in need of major surgery at the end of the season to replace my over-stressed heart. Those boys sure are fantastic though. The game last night had me on my knees during second intermission, ready to give up. But that third period was absolutely stellar from what I could hear over the radio. Whew, I still get goosebumps thinking about it. Let’s go, Caps!!!
A great posting… and I have the same issue with my wife. She can’t believe I get emotional looking at the TV…
I’ve been wrapped up in this team since Jan 1, 1988 (when my then team, the Rangers, made the Carpenter for Ridley and Miller deal… I switched my allegiances on the spot.)
Ted, when you bought the team a decade ago, I told everyone it was the best of all possible worlds as one of the fans was buying the team. You’re one of the best owners in the league in that you:
1) Hire good people
2) Listen to the good people you hire
3) Learn from mistakes
4) Don’t believe you’re infallible
The only thing I would change would be to have be owning the team since 1988…then instead of New Jersey retiring Scott Stevens’ number, the Caps would be… and we’d already have some Stanley Cups…
