The dude wrote a blog, not an article that was published. Atleast the blog got you guys excited, just in time for a possible playoff run.
Leave Mackey alone! This guy has the right to his opinion (even if he is from Pittsburgh.) GO CAPS!
Lay off Mackey. He’s doing his job and deserves to give his opinion.
Ooooh, I get it. Late April fool’s joke, right? That’s gotta be it. OR reverse psychology, maybe? No? I suppose for a “writer” who doesn’t possess competent writing or journalism skills, the only way to make a name for yourself is by attempting to be controversial, under the guise of ‘keeping it real’. To try to paint the much admired, much appreciated, down to earth Ted Leonsis as a desperate phony is a pretty lame way to try to appear insightful and derisive.
Holy crow, that was some of the worst researched writing I’ve ever seen in anything beyond a high school paper. He thinks the Caps play a DEFENSIVE style? Oh man. It’s clear this guy hasn’t seen a Caps game in some time.
I personally think we should ban all Pens fans from residing within the D.C area, they do nothing but cause trouble. I don’t see how anyone could have the balls to say that Malkin, or anyone else for that matter, is better then Ovechkin this season. If Malkin were better then he would be the one winning the goals and points race. He would have NHL legends saying that he is the MVP and that they are glad he broke their records, not Ovechkin. It angers me every time I read something like this, especially when its written by a Pens fan. But then I take comfort in the fact that Ovie plays for us and not them…
Ted, please let us know what happens after you call the editor of that paper. Tell the entire AOL marketing team to not advertise in that paper!!!!
The only worse thing than a Penguins fan is a Penguins fan who moved to DC because he couldn’t find a better job than working at Walmart in Pittsburgh.
Gosh, you had to get me started on Penguins fans. The sad truth is that this guy could be the poster child for the whole no-intelligence, no-class lot of them. I understand rooting for one’s favorite team; the problem I have with this guy – and all of them – is that they seem much more determined to rain on our parade (and to try to ruin our fun at Caps games) than to just support their team. Pittsburgh fans: if you can’t be polite and respect the fact that you’re in someone else’s town, and someone else’s building, then please shut up and go back to Pittsburgh. Oh, and take this moron with you.
Ted, this guy’s an idiot. He asked why you were calling him for support. Maybe it’s because you’re an owner who actually gives a damn about his fans.
Go Caps!
As Col. Sherman Potter would say – that guy is a horse’s “petot”. At least he got the part about the Caps winning out, and complimented the job that Coach Boudreau has done. Finally, while I do feel both Malkin and Ovechkin can be talked about in the same sentence – his conclusion is as wrong-headed as his decision to root for the Pens instead of our hometown team. LETS GO CAPS!!!
Ted,
My family and i loved your call. Keep up the good work.
I just want to know if other teams go out of their way to get in touch with thier fans?!?! Do the Pens have a STH party to meet the players? Do they go to the ESPNZone for question and answers? Are they available for the media like our team is? Does their owner take the time out to actually give the fans access to him AND read all the emails AND respond? If this guy likes the Pit so much he needs to freaking move there and leave us alone. I’m tired of all these transplants acting like jerks towards us in our own town! If you like the others so much go back!!! And stop writing about it in our papers! I hope you really laid into that editor Ted!
What a tool!
I live in Fairfax and USE to read the paper all the time and do business with the many companies that advertised there. Guess said companies just lost my consumer dollar. I will not be lining my bird cage with that paper much less reading it any more.
I dug the phone call from you, Ted. I thought it was a wondeful gesture and really got me even more pumped for the game. You just keep doing what you do. Seems to be working for ya.
Why give this newsletter website more hits than it has ever received in a single day? While I frequently read your blog to get a unique perspective on my favorite hockey team, I never would have checked out this joker’s website without your link.
While you were building the Caps back into a contender, Mario and the Pens were apartment hunting in Kansas City. Even though plenty of fans (I was one of them) questioned your moves over the past seven years, nobody can question your dedication to this area. Perhaps a couple of phone calls to fans could have saved Mario multiple trips to Kansas City?
Regardless, it would be a fitting conclusion to a great season for the Caps to march back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Penguins on the way to the Stanley Cup.
Go Caps!
I think its awesome our owner is one of the teams biggest supporters and is an actuall fan. I feel sorry for all those idiots still supporting the skins w/ little napoleon running that debacle of a team. Keep up the great work Ted and dont ever stop calling fans, or getting to big for the small guy like dannyboy. GO CAPS!!!!
I posted exactly what I thought about this… I am not going to advertise with them. Thanks for the calls Ted.
Take a page from every politician worth their salt -there are no small potatoes in the media. Ted, call the whole gang at the Times organization. You’ve built a great team, and have worked to build the fan base. That should be recognized by the media. I’m not saying Mackey needs to be a homer, but he’s certainly tone-deaf to his readership. If he wants to pen columns like that, he should move to Western MD or PA. Even Malkin acknowledges that Ovie deserves the HART more than he does. See all of you at the game! Going out now to buy a red Caps jersey.
I got called twice, but you can call me as many times as you want.
I thought journalism was supposed to be an impartial observation, not showing a homer attitude, even if the homer isn’t rooting for the home team.
Is Malkin a good player? Yes. Is he a great player? Yes. Is he better than Alex Ovechkin? Probably not. Numbers, as much as we make of them, do not lie, and Alex is more productive.
Does it matter what someone writes when nobody is reading it? I’d like to know the exponential factor you increased their readership when you post the link.
Please let us know what the editor has to say.
What a dope. What’s he going to report on next? “Less Filling” is better than “Tastes Great”?
Where the hell do I live again? Am I in the Twilight Zone? Ah, there it is, I here the music. That article is simply bizarre, go get ‘em Ted and found out why they decided to become a Pittsburgh paper. Don’t YOU live in Fairfax County?
I understand it. It’s a blog where they write about stuff. It’s not an indepth article, just a blog.
Is this really a professional paper? That article is garbage.
Ted, I appreciated the call. Thanks!
Well, thank goodness none of us live in Fairfax and won’t go out of our way to make sure that friends, family, and random strangers boycott this rag. Oh wait…I DO live in Fairfax. Awesome editorial decision, Times!
Jason Mackey should move back to Pittsburgh and the editor should be fired.
For starters, what is a Pens fan doing writing about the Caps? I’m not even going to go there about the author’s Malkin vs. Ovechkin reference, because we all know the truth. Finally, calling people up to let them know about the fan unity promotion directly… I would be highly impressed if an owner would call me up and say ‘Hey be sure to wear Red to the game tonight’ But apparently this author thought it was an unjust phone call and painted a picture of the owner ‘beggging’ fans for their support. To further it, he makes a non-relevant comparison to ‘his’ team. This article is clearly biased and the author’s opinions are quite clearly revealed. I guess he should take the beef directly to Ted if he thought it was so over the top for the phone call, and not produce this sub-par, article. I think sub-par is even not low enough to describe this…
No, I don’t get it either. I thought it was a GREAT gesture from you to those of us who have stuck with the Caps through the last few seasons. Way to get the troops fired up Ted.
Rich Z
Nice, nothing like some good old fashioned home team bashing in the local paper. That (loosely termed) “article” seems like an opinion that the writer certainly should have kept to himself. If that guy thinks that Pittsburgh is so much better, then why does he live here?
Give our buddy Jason a call/email to voice your concerns at

I think this says it all:
“I actually find myself rooting for them quite a bit — except for when they play the Penguins.”
Why worry about small potatoes like that? By posting the link you have just given him 300% more hits.
Go Caps! I’ll be there Sunday with my red on!
Who the hell is this guy?? He can’t be getting paid for this but if he is….oy!!
In fact, and I’m being honest here, I don’t understand what the guy is saying- he’s trying to be witty and clever but what is the point? I wouldnt sweat it, Ted I live in FFX County myself and have never heard about the FFX Times. And, finally Ted when you call the editor, you might add something else. This guy might. Try using complete. Sentences in his next column. Just a thought.
Send him back to Pittsburgh to write for the Gazette. That is where he belongs.
Larry
I would not give what Jason Mackey said in this paper any worry, since he is a Penguins fan. To me he seems jealous that the Caps have a great owner that truly cares about their fans. I liked the calls/messages for you and Alex. I wonder if he cares to remember that the owner (Mario Lemieux) of his team was about to sell his team, which would have had them move to another city? That does not seem to be very fan friendly to me.
Keep up the good work and Let’s go Caps!!
Are you kidding me? Seriously? Seriously? The word that comes to mind to describe this guy would likely mean only Ted and myself would be reading this post. Yet another reason to dislike Pittsburgh. And a defensive system? What team has he been watching?
Ted, I hope you bash that writer and editor.. Its people like this that makes Caps fans dispise the Pens..
Tell that Jerk off to go root for the Pens in Pittsburgh… Oh wait.. im sorry he cant get a job up there…
Confusing, huh?
What a jerk.
