Go Mike - See Ya Mr. Tony

And he can still type, Tony! Mike “gets it”. He believes he is part of the aura. He is helping the team to make a “very loud statement”. Now for Tony. He came to the game last night and because we are friends, I invited him to come to the box and hang out. His daughter is a die hard hockey fan and a loyal Washington Capitals fan. As for Tony, he hasn’t rolled out the band wagon yet for us. He doesn’t believe quite yet. He entered the box with the score 1-1. He sat next to me and bam we go up 2 to 1. The place is rocking. Tony is into it. We are high fiving and Tony is mingling with my family and my partners. Then slowly and surely, the energy gets sucked out of the room. The bandwagon starts to slowly get backed up and the Flyers tie the game. Then - pop! They go up a goal. And then whack! We are down two goals. The period ends. Mr. Tony says to me, “Oh well. I gotta go. Time to go to bed for me.” I know what he is thinking inside…”Choking dogs”. I say to him, “OK, you are leaving now. If we win after you leave, you are the only change variable in the room. I gotta get you on my blog.” He says “Of course!” with a smile. So, Tony. Don’t let the door hit you as you leave. :-) Mike - keep typing.

Mr. Leonsis, how refreshing it is to see an NHL owner actually communicating with his team’s fans. I live in Toronto, and ownership here, as you likely are aware, is controlled by corporate interests which have driven the team into the ground in recent years. You are a great model for how sports ownership should work!

  2. Jim says:

Ted, those two are both bandwagon jumpers of the highest order and don’t know squat about hockey.

Glad you brought this up in such a classy way. I’m a big fan of PTI but back when Tony used to be a journalist, not just a talking head, he’d go out of his way to write columns ripping hockey. His perogative but he didn’t endear himself to hockey fans, much less Caps fans. I think we should embrace everyone on the bandwagon, more excitement and more revenue for the team, except for Tony. We don’t need his negative energy.

On to more important things, incredible game last night! I felt lucky just to be there. We were jumping up and down and screaming like 5 year olds. Thanks for bringing hockey back to life in DC.

As Mr. Tony himself would say, “what a dope!”

Tony who? Frankly Ted, you’re much too kind. If I had a guest who came to my house for dinner and then left after the entree because he needed to get to bed, you can bet I’d never invite him back. I feel sorry for his daughter to have such a tool as a dad.

  6. Mike says:

Kornheiser can keep his bandwagon and his early bed time. Unlike the Redskins, this fan base uses Metro and has no need for his gas guzzling, always-late-to-the-game bandwagon. Maybe he can pick up the Junkies with his ride while the real fans enjoy this run.

  7. Capsaholic (Rick) says:

    Good riddance!

    Lock him out!

  8. Mike Rucki says:

Beautiful! Perhaps if Tony K doesn’t attend at all tomorrow, the Caps will win 5-0. :)

  9. Jimmy Jazz says:

Kornheiser may be the single worst journalist of his generation, but as long as he’s convinced the ESPN masses that he’s a legitimate “analyst,” sadly, the man’s here to stay.

  10. Thag says:

    Kornheiser is an idiot.

  11. RIE says:

Kornheiser is a living legend and any sports team should be honored to have him present.

  12. Fred says:

    Wow, take a breath, folks.

I think the important part of this is “because we are friends, I invited him to come to the box and hang out.” Realize these guys are friends and this is nothing more than a little good natured jab. To change it into a reason for making a personal attack is an amazing leap of reason. Even for a fan.

Tony Kornheiser appears here on TSN with the basketball guy (Wilbon?)…on “PTI”. Is this show supposed to be a parody… like The Daily Show?

To Craig Laird’s point- please buy the Maple Leafs. Pretty please? I’m simply shocked that an owner seems to care about his fan base.
