Print’s Role

Friday, April 25th, 2008

It is good that HBO and Bob Costas are exploring the state of sports media. It is good that print’s role will be discussed as well. I just received my Sports Illustrated in the mail. I got it on Thursday night. In it, it has a pull out on SI’s expert picks on who will get taken in the NFL draft. Their #1 pick prediction for the Miami Dolphins was wrong. Long of Michigan was taken and signed already. Hence, I stopped looking at that piece. Then I went to a 5,000 word article on the Giants vs. the Colts in 1956 filled with sepia-tinged photos, an article I can swear I have read in the magazine three times before. What are the editors thinking at SI? Is this how they plan to stay relevant to a younger, always on, always connected audience?

This news was very welcomed and is a testament to the individual talents of the people at the company. Kudos! Well done.

Great Game and White Out

Friday, April 25th, 2008

I went to the Wizards playoff game last night with Steve Case, Donn Davis and General Colin Powell. We all sat in the dream seats right on the floor next to the Wizards bench. It was a great environment and the team held a white out. They put white t-shirts on every single seat in the arena. It was a very cool sight to behold when you first walked into the game.

I spent some time with Mr. and Mrs. Pollin before the game started. Abe told me he thought the Wizards would come out strong and play good team basketball to get back into the series and he was right. The Wizards won big time!

When we play unselfish team basketball; rebound; and go to the hoop to draw fouls, the Wizards are as good as any team in the East.

It is clear that Gilbert Arenas is still recovering from his surgeries and that he is a great teammate. He was on the bench extolling his teammates on after he left the game with a small ding in his leg. Also, it was fun to watch LeBron James come down the court and stop and shake General Powell’s hand while the game was still going on.

I was also very humbled by the number of people that came up to me during the game to say “Great season!” and “Thanks for building such a fun team to watch!” Thank you so much.

Funny - Mythic - But Not True

Friday, April 25th, 2008

While I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble, I wasn’t crying at the end of the game.  :-)  It may sound romantic and it would create a new myth for us but it wouldn’t be true. As many of you know, I have severe allergies and the pollen count is 1100 here in DC. I received new contact lenses the day of the game as I blogged about in USA Today. Hence, my eyes were killing me and were watering a bit which made me pinch my eyes. But there were no tears of emotion, only eyes in pain because of allergies.

Also my friend, George Stamas, wasn’t hugging me out of emotional grief. We are buddies and Greeks. He was celebrating the cheering of the crowd and how far we had come as a franchise.

Business is Booming for Us

Friday, April 25th, 2008

The DC market has embraced hockey and the Caps. Ticket sales, revenues, ratings, unique visitors, page views, renewals, merchandising sales and buzz - every measure - is up up up!!!!

In an economy that is under severe pressure and a world where there are so many choices to spend one’s time and money, we are so very grateful to our fan base. Thank you.
