Good for Dan. Bad for Steve and Andy.
It is smart of the Redskins to own its media outlets.
I am more new media oriented than traditional media oriented but I empathize and applaud what Dan Snyder has done here.

I can’t stomach listening to ‘Redskins Radio’ and how it’s the Redskins never do anything wrong. They hardly ever discussed anything else but the Skins. WTEM was my only outlet to listen to the truth about the Redskins. This is bad for sports in D.C. and worse for us listeners. I won’t listen to WTEM after July 1.
This doesn’t seem good for the Capitals at all.
One less radio group interested in airing sports events would reduce leverage for the team in the next set of rights negotiations.
I’d hate to see the Capitals pulled off terrestrial radio (a la the Mystics) for lack of a good deal.
I agree with some of the above commenters. Ted, why would you think this is a good development. WTEM has actually been improving in the last year or two in its coverage of local teams other than the Redskins. I can’t imagine that will continue with Snyder owning the stations.
Dan Snyder can buy my blog if he wants. I’ve certainly criticized Joe Gibbs and the Redskins numerous times in the three years I’ve had it.
So he controls a sports talk radio station that is hard to pick up in various parts of the area and has had miniscule ratings since day one. I wouldn’t worry Caps fans. Support the station that does carry the Caps games. Call in to their post game show and support the advertisers to that station. That’s how you can help the Caps.
I don’t even listen to ‘TEM anymore since I got XM. Can’t wait to see how this all turns out.
Can’t agree Ted. It is NOT good for one local team to be controlling ALL of the sports radio in town. Not good at all. How much hockey do you really think Snyder’s minions are going to talk?
hey – he can sell more “Pulte Homes” sponsored “scoreboard updates/weather report/injury information” and whatever else his lackeys can squeeze into the broadcast.
I wish I could share your enthusiasm. As the article states, “The purchase gives Snyder control of sports talk radio in Washington.” Bruce Gilbert can talk all he wants of encouraging a “freewheeling exchange of opinions,” but business is business. Its not healthy for media to have to weigh consumer’s interests so directly against those of management and ownership.
I also doubt this will be good for the Capitals and other D.C. area sports teams. The local sports media already neglects everything non-Redskins summer through February. I hope you have something to offer to Mr. Snyder, Ted, because I don’t get the impression he cares about anything other than his wallet.
Next up for Dan-the Washington Post.
I guess there will always be bloggers to criticize the Skins.
