NHL Owners Meeting

I will be at the NHL Owners meeting today in NYC. I am sure it will be a long and interesting meeting.

I am up early and have received several emails that make me smile. :-)

It is almost bordering on mass hysteria and it isn’t even July yet. There are emails with messages to sign  Laich; sign Huet; sign Fedorov; sign Green; sign someone! I have requests for a stay at home D man; a rugged wing in free agency; recruit new assistant coaches; draft a big physical player; make a trade; trade up in the draft; resign Peter Bondra; retire Calle’s jersey; and on and on.

We have passionate fans. You have a lot on your minds and you are not afraid to express it. Thank you. :-)

  1. Ted: You deserve it all–congrats on sticking with GMGM and the plan. I think we are the new Detroit of the league. We will be at the top three of the league for years to come.

  2. I don’t see Fedorov’s number getting retired, unless he plays here for another 10 years. And that ain’t happening.

Bonzai and Olie have to have their numbers retired eventually. Management owes that to both the stars and the fans. Not sure Bonzai is even technically retired yet, and Olie isn’t, so it’s not an immediate thing.

I like the idea of retiring Calle Jo’s number, but I wouldn’t be offended if they didn’t. I would be if they didn’t retire Bonzai/Olie’s numbers down the road.

  3. All I ask for is to keep doing the good job that you have been doing with the Caps. Granted 64oz beer in an insolated mug at the Phone Booth would also be nice. It would go real nice with a donut as I cheer on the Caps.

  4. It’s awesome that there’s this interest in the Caps in June and July. :)

    My personal priorities would be:

    1) Sign Huet – He’s a UFA on July 1, so the clock is ticking. Personally if he signs, that will determine the salary cap room for all the others

    2) Sign Green – Based on the Huet contract, we can determine what sort of figure Green can be given.

    3) Decide on Fedorov – Sign him or not… I suspect he will be here next year (and I said I’d buy a jersey if he is!)

    4) Brooks Laich – another tough, but pleasant decision. :)

As for the stud defenseman, he’s on the way (Alzner). And if we need a rugged wing in free agency…uh, we just resigned Matt Bradley, he’s pretty rugged. We could also resign Matt Cooke.

As for retiring jerseys… in the following order:

12 – Bondra (in 2008-09 if he has time to get here)
37 – Kolzig (after he retires)
91 – Fedorov (if he stays in DC and we win a Cup while he’s here)

    And in the late 2020′s:
8 – Ovechkin (he’s going to retire sometime, and they’ll be able to show off the half-dozen Stanley Cup rings he’s won, etc.)

As much as I loved watching Calle play here for all those years, retiring his jersey might be a bit much.

  5. Can we make sure we bring up the officiating? Some of us have not forgotten that joke that ended our season.
    Thanks.
