Here is a wise retort to some of the “sky is falling” blog posts out there. A very good analysis indeed.

Food for thought:
Sign Jason Smith to a 2-year deal. While we look good offensively, we are sorely lacking in the defense department. There aren’t many solid blueliners out there.
“sky is falling” Okay please don’t belittle us. We invested A LOT of money in your team, and we have a washed up goalie to look forward to. The entire situation was out of yours and GMGM’s control, but we did not come out on top, so don’t condescend to your fans. Goalie is the MOST important role on a team, so yeah the sky is falling. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think Huet would have won us a cup either we need to trade for a reasonable goalie or amp up our defense stat. Fedorov is no longer a luxury, his defensive awareness and ability to win key face-offs will be needed to make up for our weakness in net. Four million is too much, and three is pushing it but the deal needs to get done. Either that or get a darn good defenseman, or we’ll be counting in Tavers to our future plans.
Theodore is just as good as Theodore, and comes to us affordable and energized to play. Huet obviously wanted money and now he has it, he also has to fight for a #1 spot. His loss, our gain.
I have to agree, regardless of my proclivity to sing the praises of Olie Kolzig. Although, if more people spent less time looking at goalie stats and more time looking at the patterns in a particular goalie’s career, perhaps one could argue that Theodore may have resurrected last season, but he also tends to have below average years just following an average or better year.
Still the salary cap is a reality and no one can really know what it’s like being a GM who has to make command decisions. Both Kolzig and Huet felt that a move was necessary at this point their careers. Think about the choices, other than Theadore. I would have probably signed Theodore as well.
I agree fully with JP on this on. Another great 1st day of free agency Ted, send my thanks to Mr. McPhee.
