Too Funny
Monday, July 7th, 2008Web 2.0 Gridlock
Monday, July 7th, 2008Yikes.
There is no IPO market. None. Zero.
There is a tougher VC market as investors are driving tougher deals if any deals are getting done at all.
There is no credit market. Try getting receivables financing this summer.
There are very few acquisitions being done as:
- Microsoft figures out its next move;
- Yahoo figures out its next move;
- AOL figures out its next move and digests its latest acquisitions;
- MySpace and NewsCorp figure out its next move and digest the Dow Jones acquisition;
- Facebook figures out how to justify a $15 billion valuation that makes mergers of private companies into it very difficult indeed. Who will take that paper and valuation?
- And Google just stand still and gets a disproportionate share of search and ad dollars and market share. To the victor go the spoils but are we seeing a ONE COMPANY town being developed?
Color me nervous. Does any one else feel the same out there?
Good Article Here
Monday, July 7th, 2008This is well done and very thought-provoking. Read this article here.
Here is a thought we all need to chew on though regarding this new CBA. The Capitals look like a model franchise. We have a young team, an up-and-coming team. We can keep it together. Our business is booming and we have great fan support. We have managed the salary cap well. We may end up selling close to 5,000 new season tickets this off season. All signs are up. Couldn’t be better, right?
Then how come we will lose MORE money this coming season than we did last season? We have done everything right - our fans are in love with the team and we are growing double digit in revenues - and yet our payroll is growing faster than our revenues. Hence we will lose more money as we grow.
So something isn’t working regarding the new CBA and, frankly, I have yet to receive an email or read a message board post or blog post or a media article that says, “Spend less money in building your team or keeping your team together.” I am not sure how the new CBA will play out in the long term but the salary cap inflation and the new contracts offered to young players and free agents are making the business model turn upside down yet again. I know that is a fact in DC. I am sure it is a fact around the NHL, too.
Youth Must be Served
Monday, July 7th, 2008We saw a passing of the torch yesterday, a 22-year-old stepped up and a 27-year-old stood down. That was an amazing day of tennis. Nadal is a warrior and Federer is a champion of grace, style and substance.
You could see in Federer’s eyes that he knew that he had been surpassed by a younger great player. What an epic battle. What a fun finals at Wimbledon.
Great Thoughts on the Goaltending Position
