It is the Olympics and one of my favorite sports to watch is beach volleyball. I was so excited to see the US men and women win gold medals. But if beach volleyball is on TV and it isn’t the Olympics, I could care less. I don’t watch and I have no interest. Why is that? Why is it that the Olympics brand has me watching the finals of men’s beach volleyball at 11:00pm and I really care about the outcome.? Strange indeed.
I forwarded your comment to a friend, since we had been experiencing much the same. His response was interesting:
As you would expect, Ted raises a good point . . . I think part of it has to do with the world championship aspect of this competition, and the fact that each match has significance, rather than a typical league game during a regular season; why do folks get more stoked about the Stanley Cup playoffs rather than the season . . Ted should consider this point more because it may hold keys to increasing interest in the Caps all season long.
I was up late pumping my fist in in that third set of the volleyball final. Same exact thing.
Me, I love watching the beach volleyball, as I have a crush on Misty May and Kari Walsh… have for many years…
*sigh*
My wife is cool about it, so no worries (she has a crush on Johnny Depp…)
yep, i also got suck into it and was screaming when Misty-May and Kerri put away the Chinese women…I also now know that nick names of all the major men players..”thin beast”, “the professor”, “jaws”, etc (more useless knowledge i have bouncing around my head)….at least i don’t feel as bad about watching Beach Volleyball as i did about the watching Olympic badminton
Maybe its nice to see the true passion of whatever sport is being played and maybe the emotional investment these folks are making to whatever the sport is draws us in. Maybe some Decathlon tonight !
I caught the most incredible game of womens handball in which Norway defeated Korea with a buzzer beater at time expired. Maybe on of the greatest games I’ve ever watched!
Careful Ted! If a MSM writer wrote the same thing about Hockey, he’she would be faced with a cyber lynching. Not that I don’t agree with you, I’m just saying…
Scarcity (only one Olympic gold medal every four years) and patriotism. I could care less about tiddly winks (and beach volleyball too), but if somebody’s going for the gold, it sure better be an American!
I am the same way: I watch different sports if it’s Olympics and don’t really care about them any other times. I know that many of my friends are the same way. I think that it has something to do with supporting your country in the events that really matter.
If NHL wants more fans it gotta respect Olympics and other international tournaments.
I feel the same way about water polo. I think we’re in the gold medal match this weekend! go US!
