The Oriole Way

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Back when the team was truly a model franchise, much was made of the Oriole Way, a template that was used to draft, develop and train players and a way to teach the game in Double A and Triple A ball and then in the professional ranks. The concept was to teach a system and have a plug and play mentality with the players on the pro and amateur levels.

At the rookie game on Thursday, a friend mentioned that the Caps and Hershey were starting to remind him of the Oriole Way. We play the same system. The coaches and GMs of both teams are in synch. We draft, they develop. We replenish them, they send up prospects to us trained in the way we play the game. It is a virtuous cycle and as I promised, we would leverage the Kettler Capitals Iceplex and the Hershey Bears all as part of our overall rebuild. I thought our team looked like it had played together for a long time against the Flyers rookies.

There is never one thing that you can point to about failure or success. It is usually a systemic issue and I believe in the systems and methodologies we are delivering to build a great franchise now. Check out this article for a good write-up of what was seen at that game on Thursday.

I Have Been Tempted to Do Something Like This Too

Friday, September 19th, 2008

I understand what Mark Cuban is going through. I have wanted to publish some of the emails I have received during our rebuild or after some of the trades we made. But I decided to take the high road. There is a lot of keyboard courage out there. This kind of discourse is unacceptable and really beneath human dignity. Please remember that what you write can be very hurtful; and can be traced to you as well.

People are Excited

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Thank you. It is heartwarming to me personally to see so much excitement in the blogosphere and with our fan base.

To read quotes such as ”perhaps the most talented team in franchise history” gives me goose bumps. We have a big responsibility to live up to your expectations and we all understand that fact.

But - to date - we haven’t come close to meeting our own expectations. We have miles and miles to go before we sleep.

Dandy Warhols

Friday, September 19th, 2008

The Dandy Warhols will be playing at the 930 club in downtown DC on Monday evening. I, of course, will be in attendance with my wife and some friends. I bet I am the only NHL team owner that will attend a Dandy Warhols concert this season. :-)

In honor of their tour, here is the film Dig! in which the Dandy Warhols play a seminal role courtesy of SnagFilms. Check it out this weekend.

Spout and SnagFilms

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Spout is a great site for people who love the movies and SnagFilms has partnered with them in some very unique ways.

To start, here is the Spout site. Check out the SnagFilms widget embedded on their home page.

I Doubt Mark Zuckerberg Wrote This Blog Post

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Sounds like a big company PR exec penned this write-up, don’t you think?

People can see through inauthenticity. Mark Zuckerberg shouldn’t be handled. He should write and communicate as himself. Be straightforward and honest.

Facebook is getting killed of late by spam. People are getting hacked. The ads that are served have zero relevance to me. My favorite widgets disappeared in the new design. As a developer, I am getting no viral traction anymore from our film widgets and widgets have a harder time being embedded in the new design. Other than that, did you enjoy the play Mrs. Lincoln?

Tough! Sexy! Mean!

This is so great! Congratulations to Alex. And as a note, I used to go to Hair Cuttery when I lived in Great Falls. It was a damn fine haircut and an affordable price to boot.

Caps Rookies 7 - Flyers Rookies 0

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Thanks to all of you that came out yesterday. That was a terrific and fun way to spend an afternoon together. I thought our team played hard and we played our system which isn’t much fun to play against. We looked good for a week together as a unit.

The pros all report tomorrow and Saturday. Then the real camp begins. Go Caps!
