Caps Camp To Date

I believe firmly this is our best camp since we have owned the team.

Everything has run on time and at an up tempo–with speed and enthusiasm and passion. Every moment is scripted–but there is room for “improv”– the players feel a part of what is happening and have bought into the drills.

To have almost 70 players competing and playing together–working for the same goal has been very refreshing; to watch Coach skate them hard–and then to see the players in a scrimmage–playing for a newly formed campĀ  Cup–is really a treat and has made the practices very enjoyable–fast–and hard fought.

There is a great atmosphere at camp–everyone is fit–everyone is working hard to become the best conditioned team in the NHL so we can play our “in your face fore check–keep the puck in your end” system that Coach preaches.

It is also great to see Chris Clark and Michael Nylander out on the ice again; they were missed last season and it feels like we added two new free agents out there for our team.

We are loaded– there is so much talent on the ice for the Capitals and the Hershey Bears– and every player senses it and feels very focused on making a great impression.

I can honestly say this is the most comfortable I have felt with our team since we bought it from Mr Pollin; we have so many options–so many good young players–so many seasoned vets; so many prospects who can push the vets and will make Hershey a very good team this year.

Come on out to watch a scrimmage or a practice– you will see what I mean. This is a very confident and talented group of players– you will be proud of them– they are ready to go– and want badly to improve on last year’s playoff performance. It is exciting to watch–something is in the air–it feels new and different and good.

  1. Watching Sat. and Sun. training camp was great. The guys never giving up one inch on the drills, checking, fighting for the puck and even bleeding during the scrimmages was amazing to watch. You can tell the commitment out on the ice, guys fighting for jobs. My only wish is that the local news (NBC, ABC, CBS) would do something on these guys more frequently than a ten second spot. I can’t wait until they see the Verizon Center and the sea of red again during regular season play. GO CAPS.

  2. I have been attending Caps training camps for many years and I have to agree with Ted this is the best camp I have seen in terms of how the practices have been conducted, the tempo and the skill of the players. I am very excited for the upcoming season.

  3. I’m so excited for the Caps this year that I’m changing my internet provider to one that carries the Caps in Centreville Md. Go Caps

  4. Exactly, the Coach B and Ovechkin era is really quite amazing , the atmosphere and energy is like any other Caps team i can think of going back to 82-83′..awesome.

  5. Ted, absolutely spot-on. I’d hate to make the ‘cuts and or trades’ that we know have to be made. We can’t keep ‘em all. The Caps have been the water-cooler talk in my office these days — not the ‘Skins. Of course it helps that I have an office load of Caps stuff…..

  6. I wish I could get out of this office and make it to practice, because you make it sound like so much fun. I agree we are quite loaded with talent this year, and I think the personalities fit together well too. Very exciting time to be a Capitals fan!

  7. Ted, this is the deepest Caps team I have *ever* seen, even going back to the late 1980s when the Caps were one of the elite teams in the league (who had the misfortune of being elite when the Oiler dynasty was going strong.) There are some tough decisions that are going to have to be made, and some of the players who are on the border line of the team are really good players, guys like Boyd Gordon, Dave Steckel, Sami Lepisto, Chris Bourque, John Erskine, etc.

I don’t envy the decisions that George and Bruce have to make, but then again, there at least 25 GMs and head coaches that do envy them.

There is nothing stopping this team from winning the Southeast Division again and the Eastern Conference. The only thing really standing in the way of the Stanley Cup is one of the following: Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars, Calgary Flames….Thankfully, being in the east, the Caps would only have to get past one of these teams to win the Cup. :)
