Larry Brooks makes us sound like the old Broad Street Bullies; storming the crease; working hard; winning battles; and playing rough and tumble hockey.
I thought we played a better forecheck and we scored goals the old fashion way. Our goaltending was sound. We killed off penalties when needed and we beat a very, very good team to get two needed points at home.
We have a very good record of late at home which is vital in this league. The NHL is a great league with real competitive balance. There are no easy wins in this league and to beat the Rangers – with mounting injuries – felt good. Enjoy the win. Onward to Monday night against a division foe.
The game Sat. night was the second best effort the team has put out so far this season. The Vancouver game was still better, but this was an outstanding effort against a legitimate Cup contender (although I don’t think the Rangers are as good as the Caps, by any means).
Most of the game was played in the NY end of the rink and both goaltenders were outstanding (It could be argued that Lundqvist was better in that he had more work to do than Johnny, but Johnny got the W so he is the #1 star, Lundqvist the #2.)
As for Larry, if he wants to talk about missed calls, how about Scott Gomez’s dive on the penalty on Semin with 2:15 to go. Yes Semin did foul Gomez, but Gomez went down like he had gotten a two hander to the back of the knee. I haven’t seen diving like that since Beijing this summer (and they were much better!)
Anyway, tonight it’s Tampa and their bushel of former Caps (Olie of course, but also Pettinger, Eminger, Heward and the injured Jeff Halpern). From what I heard on the news, the Bolts offered Olie the chance to play tonight, and knowing Olie, he probably accepted the offer.
Let’s go Caps!
Great game, good crowd, lots of fun. The boys played extremely well. It’s nice to go home a winner.
