Grateful for the Point

That was a tough game, the second in two nights - back to back - in the Devil’s barn.

There were lots of injuries and big names out such as Semin; Fedorov; Morrisonn; Johnson and we are still missing Brian Pothier.

Our goaltending - as strange as it may sound as we let in five goals - was actually quite good. We are a gutsy team; a team that plays with heart; and we do have some unique and one of a kind talents like Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. What a play and pass and catch and shot with one second left on the clock! All I could say was “Wow!”

We now have earned points in nine of 10 games. We now have some time to heal before we head out west for a very tough road trip and set of games.

And to all of those folks who were whining about Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom and their productivity, it would be OK to stop now. :-)

  1. Ted: The NHL should start reexamining the shootout; it seems like most games go to a shootout these days. I think if you can’t beat a team in regulation or overtime, one shouldn’t get two points. I’m not sure what the NHL’s market research or focus groups say about the shooutout, but I think it’s time to see whether it’s really in the best interests of the game. Sincerely, Andrew

  2. That was a fun game…even with the L in the shootout, a great game for fans.

Now, CAPS fans, vote…http://fanballoting.nhl.com/. It seems that only wings and canadian fans know where to go. Both our Alex deserve a trip…and I put in a nod for Mr. Green too.

  3. That was a fun game Saturday, but it would have been nice to hold a lead. Ah well, OV got us a standings point with his heroics in the last second.

Backstrom is clearly out of his slump. In the last week he had 2G, 9A for 11 points over the 4 games. When the league announces it’s 3 stars for the week from last week, I can see Nick getting one of them. Of course, they may go with Ovie, who had 5G and 5A for the week with 4 multi-point games.

How about this stat? The Caps haven’t had a regulation loss since November 1, and they are 5-1-2 for November so far, which means we are getting 75% of the available points (12 of 16). Over a full season, that’d be 123 points.

As for overall stuff, the Caps are, right now, 1 point out of 2nd overall in the East, and are 5 points back of the conference leading Rangers, but the Caps have 3 games in hand on them. If the Caps keep playing tough, in the end, the top seed in the East can be won. The trip the Caps have coming up is insane, in that both the Ducks and Kings are waiting for them in 2 and 3 days respectively. Literally waiting as they’re off until then as well. Follow that back-to-back with a trip to San Jose (the hottest team in the league right now) and then Minnesota, and this is one tough trip. I can see coming home with only 4 points and the trip being a success. Ideally you want 8, but 4 would put a smile on my face.

Then after that no more long trips to the west…

  4. The Fan Club and Road Crew did a great job cheering on the Caps. The game wasn’t the best but coming away with a point to start a long road trip is great.

And it looks like OV and Backstrom are back!

  5. I was at the game. What a see-saw. And how fun it was to see the faces of Devils fans after our last goal. The way the Caps have tough luck in the shootout, I’d love to see them go all out for the winner anytime they are in OT. With the point secured, go get the point the way we know how – with high-powered offense. Probably a better chance of getting the extra point that way than in the shootout.

  6. Glad to see I wasn’t the only one there who thought JT60 had a pretty solid outing last night. My friend Jim (a Devils STH since 1983) and I (a Caps STH these past three seasons) really enjoyed both games. They were very exciting, and for my part, the fact the Caps captured 3 of 4 available points made it all even sweeter. Please keep up the great work and thanks for continuing to provide us hockey fans in the DC Metro such a great team to watch. LETS GO CAPS!!!!

  7. This team has tremendous heart. It is perhaps not surprising that Ovie and Backstrom had a great game when they were reunited with Kozlov. They just seem to be a perfect line. Kozlov is consistently underrated by our fan base(I frequently hear derisive “Kozlov!” calls at Verizon Center.). While the power of a line with Ovie and Semin is unquestionable, if Semin could anchor a second line of similar potency, you would really have something.

  8. These days we are dreading the shootout…yet we are indeed thankful for the point. These two men have such an amazing talent. One over reported and one under I would say…Time to move on er out…westward ho!
