Shaken

That was a tough scene last night watching a former player being taken off the ice on a stretcher.

Jamie Heward is a very nice man, a family man. He is a great guy and we are all hopeful that he recovers quickly and can get back on the ice to play for the Lightning ASAP. Playing hockey is in his blood. It is his how he makes his living and his passion. We care for him in the hockey brotherhood and our thoughts of support go out to his family as well.

Alex Ovechkin plays with speed and power. He is the most authentic and honest player in the game. There was no intention of a misdeed with the hit. He was as concerned as everyone in the arena or who was watching on television. Injuries happen in this game. We have had our share as a team - just look no further than Brian Pothier’s injury 14 months ago from concussion - so we have great empathy.

We also had to finish the game last night and I was proud of our resilience and our fortitude. We get another win on home ice. We didn’t play particularly well after jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. We were trying to coast and all I could think about was the Rangers game when they took a 4-0 lead on us and we beat them in OT. It feels good right at this moment in time to be 2nd in the East and have the 4th best record in the entire NHL. It won’t get any easier for us on Saturday as we will play a highly motivated team in the Rangers at home. See you at the game. Go Caps!

A Perfect Game in Chicago

I am in Florida where it is 80 degrees and was in my shorts and t-shirt watching the Winter Classic with my family. We were all wishing we were freezing and outside watching the game in person at Wrigley Field.

I thought the event was a huge hit. It was a great game with a great venue and the NBC camera work was spectacular. The announcers were great. The game was fun. It was a perfect event for the NHL. Well done. Bravo. A great day for hockey. We have stolen the spotlight from college football. Our game has a much bigger event look and feel than any bowl game on that day and date now. Imagine that.

And before you ask, of course we have asked the league about our participating in a Winter Classic but so has every other team in the NHL. The league has done a great service here to the teams. We all want to participate. It would be so much fun for our fans and players.
