Take the Two Points, Say Thank You

I watched the game on TV then listened to the end and OT in our car in the parking lot of the Kennedy Center on our way to a MLK Day celebration courtesy of Georgetown University and John Thompson.

I think 2:00 pm games are odd, just a weird body clock start time and a sluggish game.

But we will take the two points and coupled with a Boston OT loss, we are now eight points out of the Eastern Conference lead. It is amazing that we play yet again tonight against Ottawa and then the team – except for Alex Ovechkin - gets to rest up and heal during the All-Star break. Then we can focus as we sprint to the end of the season.

It is great to see Alex lead the NHL in goals scored and to join Peter Bondra and Mike Gartner as the only Caps with four 30 goal seasons and his OT winner was accomplished after a wonderful pass from Alex Semin with the Islanders short handed yet again. I think Alex scored twice last night with Brendan Witt in the box and the Islanders scored against us with Alex Ovechkin in the box. True synergy. Witt is now minus 28 for the year and is minus 7 in his last two games against us.

The tables sure have turned in our battles against the Islanders. As a young adult and a Caps fan, the Islanders were always a team that scared me and were a true nemesis to us during the years.

Everyone in Hollywood Wants to Go to DC and Everyone in DC Wants to Go to Hollywood

My family and I have gone to some of these parties, galas and events. They have been festive but truthfully they have not been over the top or offensive in their decadence.

We will attend even more tonight. We have met lots of interesting and fun folks but at the end of the day, we tend to gravitate to hang out with friends and family.

We are all witnessing a massive regime change. We are all optimistic. We are all shocked that the stars of the new DC are the folks who bundle up cash from people like me as fundraisers. We are all happy that change is coming though. :-)

Party on DC! And now everyone at Sundance is hurrying to DC for tonight’s big parties at the Creative Coalition; Huffington Post; Verizon Center; and getting ready for Tuesday’s main events.

Capitals on TV Today at 2pm

Today’s game is at 2:00 pm from the Island.

I trust we will be focused and work hard for the two points.

Every game counts the same in the standings.

The Islanders are struggling at this point in time. I am hopeful we don’t have a letdown after two big and tough games against the Penguins and the Bruins. Two points is two points.

Change We Can Believe In

That tilt was played at the intensity level of a playoff game with tight forechecking and no mistakes. There was great goaltending; strong D and good special teams play.

And the stars were shining with a Mike Green power play goal and an Alex Semin rocket of a shot goal after a series of dipsy doodle moves.

I was sitting with Peter Bondra last night when Alex Semin scored his goal. He gave me a high five as he very much appreciated that move and that slap shot.

An amazing observation: The Boston Bruins have played Southeast Division opponents more than we have. We have been mostly playing Western based teams and Northeast based teams. It is just a quirk in the scheduling. We get into the teeth of the division schedule after the All-Star break. We have played quite well against the Bruins, Rangers and the Pens and we have split our two games against the Flyers to date although they have gained three of the four available points against us as we beat them in a shootout. We seem to get up against teams that we believe are very talented and are teams we could see in the playoffs.

We have played 46 games to date and only eight against our division foes. The Bruins have played 12 games against the SE Division and we are the only team to have beaten them to date from the Southeast.

We must keep our focus and play well against whoever the opponent is. Two points is two points but a big win in front of another sold-out crowd sure feels good. Go Caps!

If It Wasn’t Sad It Would be Funny

For those of us locally who watched the Georgetown vs. Duke game yesterday, we were all shocked and infuriated over a technical foul called on freshman phenom Greg Monroe. The call, with Monroe on the bench, was his fourth foul and whenever Greg was on the floor playing, the team played well. Whenever he sat, Duke took advantage. Greg didn’t say a thing and he didn’t deserve a technical foul. We were the better team when Greg was on the floor.

Here is Mike Wise’s column and wouldn’t you know it? The true culprit for the technical foul call was someone wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers cap. :-)  The call was for “salty language” and there you go. Too funny.

Georgetown has the toughest schedule in the nation. Look it up if you don’t believe me. We played well against Duke but it is just hard to beat seven players when you have five on the floor. Duke had five players, a ref and a Steelers fan playing against us. Hoya Saxa.

DC Randomness and Oddities

  1. When I got up early this morning and the temperature outside was exactly ZERO degrees. I do not ever remember seeing that temperature mark here in DC;
  2. My wife and I drove into DC last night for a party and for dinner. It was a Friday night rush hour on a historic weekend. We were prepared for historic traffic jams but guess what? There was NO traffic. We got into the city with ease. The traffic flow was much better than a typical Friday evening. What gives?
  3. We ate at a new great dining establishment and the chef is a HUGE Caps fan. Who knew? We NOW HEARTILY endorse THE SOURCE as a great in place in DC to eat with friends and Caps fans. The food and ambiance is great and the chef is a hardcore Caps fan and follower.
  4. Security into our building tonight will be extra tight and there will be some street closings around the building so leave extra time to get to the game tonight. It will be a Red Out so wear your colors with pride and be loud and proud.
  5. At about 11:15 pm last night on Constitution Avenue, I saw a jogger wearing shorts and a t-shirt running with great speed and laughing and shouting out loud. I think I heard him chanting, ”Yes we can!” It is an amazing time to be in DC.
