Hoya Saxa

Another big win. Two rivals in the Big East playing a tough battle at Verizon Center, a conference that I think is the best in the land, even better than the ACC.

It is amazing how tough the Georgetown schedule is playing Connecticut; Pittsburgh; Notre Dame; Syracuse; and Duke all in a three week period.

Georgetown wins the home end of the battle last night 88-74 against Syracuse. On to Duke. Hoya Saxa!

Character Win Last Night

We needed the two points. We needed to win on the road. We needed to stop the recent slide and we needed to show we can win in Pittsburgh.

Check. Check. Check. And check. In fact, we have now won three straight in Pittsburgh.

There sure is a lot of talent on the ice when we play Pittsburgh and the players sure get amped up, don’t they? The wins in Pittsburgh are very satisfying and I am sure that at some point, a road to a Stanley Cup will go through Pittsburgh. They are a great franchise with great players and I believe, because of how they are constructed and based on their core group of young players, we will be playing them and competing with them for a long time.

I thought the ice last night at Mellon Arena was sub-optimized. The players seemed to be falling and the puck was struggling to move. Sometimes the building is too warm and ice quality suffers and sometimes it may be too cold. When it is too cold, the ice gets brittle, cracks and cakes. I am not sure what the issue was last night but the ice didn’t look great to me.

It was a very satisfying win. When you work hard and bond as a group and play your system, good things happen. It is just a two point night on the road but, for some reason, it felt a little bit more special. Thank you. Go Caps!

Also, I thought I saw some empty seats last night at the game. The economy is taking its toll everywhere sad to say. I am very grateful that we have another sellout this Saturday night as we battle Boston at home. Please wear red. We need a loud and proud building as we play the best team in the East right now.

Get Well Soon Steve Jobs

Perhaps the most influential business exec of the last 25 years, Steve Jobs, stepped down from the helm of Apple last evening.

This is a shocking development but Steve is a family man and needs the time to recoup, get strong and to spend true quality time with his family.

I first met Steve Jobs in 1979. He is a true dedicated genius, one of the few people that I would call a great generational thinker. At a time like this, we should all collectively thank him for all he has done for consumers and the industry and wish him Godspeed and to get well soon.

I Apologize

I used the word “I” way too much in this interview. That isn’t like me. We are all in this together - our partners, families, fans and players.

“We” is more powerful than “I”. There is no “I” in team. You know what I mean.

Please accept my apologies everyone. This is a total team and community effort. Let’s say, “Let’s go Caps!”

The NHL All-Star Game

It is an exhibition game in the middle of the season. There are no points awarded for it and it is all about individual achievement and fun. It is really an event that caters to television, sponsors and the local fans in the community where the game is played.

I watch All-Star games and my only hope is that our players who participate don’t get hurt. I have zero emotional connection to the game.

At season’s end, there is a vote for the best players in the NHL. Alex Ovechkin has been a FIRST team ALL NHL player in each and every year he has played and he was last season’s MVP. That is the All-Star vote that matters.

So it is now time to stop our collective whining here. I didn’t want to mount an All-Star online voting campaign. I didn’t want to expend franchise energy and resources on a program that frankly is about individual stats and not about playoff hockey and the pursuit of a Stanley Cup. I also think that franchises that mount campaigns to support individuals for All-Star games look “small time and unsophisticated” to the media, longtime fans and industry insiders.

That was a decision that I stand by. I am much more concerned with our play of late than I am about the All-Star game balloting process.

We now have many players who have been out for a long time trying to be re-integrated into our team. We also need to find motivation and play with desperation and show hard work and play physical with a big lead in the standings. This is a new experience for this team and right now we have lost our focus and our momentum. All of our energies need to marshaled to get back to being a tight knit team that plays together and is trying to achieve a common goal. We also need to play with a chip on our shoulder. We are not taken seriously yet and the best way to get respect is to win; be a long term playoff performer; and win a Stanley Cup. Everything else will take care of itself if we win a championship. A Stanley Cup clarifies and provides true signal through all of the noise.

I appreciate the media writing supportive and critical articles such as this one and the emails I have received about the All-Star game but to be direct and honest, I don’t care. I don’t want us to waste cycles on this exhibition game any longer. We need to be focused on the next 38 games to qualify for the playoffs. That is all that matters to me and our franchise.
