Hey Ted..did u notice that Joe Beninati has a new blog after every game? http://comcastsportsnet.tv/pages/joecaps_blog
Steve are you kidding? A really good announcing crew? Benninati is the class of the league, and Laughlin is just fun. Get a life. CSN is great, and as hockey fans we are lucky to have them. Just ask any Orioles or Nats fan–you want MASN?
I actually dropped our Cable company a few months ago because I couldn’t stand the “Homers” who broadcast the Flyers games. I’m about 20 minutes from Hershey in SouthCentral PA. (Go Bears !!) I never realized how bad the Flyers announcers were until the Caps/Flyers met in the playoffs and they constantly argued obvious calls against the Flyers and supported obviously bad calls against the Caps.
Anyway, once I found out I could get the DC Comcast broadcasts of the Caps via satelite, I signed up in an instant. I have to admit I’ll miss seeing so many Phillies games, but seeing so many Caps games helps me get over it.
Well, CSN does a great job of covering their teams. But, living in PA I’m absolutely sick that they don’t allow our area to CSN Philadelphia. Even Comcast cable customers in our town can’t get it and we’re 2 hours outside the city! Plus, they won’t allow it on the satellite. I’m a Flyers fan (sorry Ted, the Caps are my strong second team!) and I had to buy NHL Center Ice just to see the Flyers play. As far as I’m concerned, they’re right up there with Microsoft as a monopoly.
Now if they can stop missing faceoffs and hire a real announcing crew they really would be in good shape.
The comcast Caps broadcasts are pretty good. There are a few things they could do better though.
1) Whenever the puck is in play, that’s where the camera should be. I’m tired of missing faceoffs (especially in the offensive or defensive end) because we’re watching the back of a player in pain at the bench.
2) Is VC not suited well for multiple camera angles? I feel like we get a lot of the same shots over and over again. Take Saturday Night Hockey in Canada’s coverage and use them as a model (minus Don Cherry’s outfits…) – they rock the coverage!
3) Reshow penelties – regardless of how poor a call it may have been. If a penelty is called right before a break – there are times I never know why or what the call was before it’s over. I think the Verizon’s you make the call is awesome!
That’s really it. Comcast does a pretty good job generally!
Nice post, Ted. Comcast does a great job. I grew up in a Fox Sports Net market and when I moved to DC, I was afraid Comcast wouldn’t show FSN programming (college basketball, college football, etc) due to network rivalries, but I am impressed to see them do that. The broadcasts are also higher quality video than what I grew up watching in Michigan, as far as clarity and crispness of the video. But I guess if you have HD, you don’t worry about that anyway.
Now, when is Comcast going to throw down the gauntlet and start a national channel to take down ESPN? THAT would be great.
Agreed. COMCAST Sportsnet does a great job with the Caps.
