Jonathan Warner – Read It and Reap!

I hope the folks that call the Caps radio show all of the time after every game read this blog post.

I hope the hosts of the show read it too.

We wouldn’t want facts to ever get in the way of fans’ opinions though, would we?

Thanks Japers’ for the hard work and the analytics. Jonathan - you are now armed with facts. Dazzle me.

  1. I watch games, and let the facts fall where they may….we will not get out of the 1st round if Schultz is +20 minutes and killing PK’s….who he happens to be on the ice with for a +14 (boy has that fallen recently…hmm who’s NOT scoring ??) has nothing to do his slow speed, not clearing the crease, blocking the goalies view, and not using ANY physicality to take folks off the puck (notice I did not say HITTING)…ohh and his outlet pass is not as good as folks clamer about either…I like Jeff, met him once, doesn’t mean he should not be in Hersehy developing like other D – its a shame we have likely seen his potential.

  2. I’ve read it, and I greatly appreciate Japer’s research.
It gives me more ammunition in defense of Schultz. Yes, while at times I’ve criticized his play – only recently, though – I’ve also defended the fact that he’s just 23 and has a plus 14 +/-. As Ken Sabourin – a former defenseman – tells me, you don’t get that by accident. And he believes Schultz, too, will develop even more by his mid-20′s. I’ll admit, you usually only notice a defenseman – just like a cornerback in football – when things go wrong. They’re the last line of defense. But, the Caps defense has has also tighten up in recent games. Thanks for the input. And Ted, thanks for listening!!

  3. I get tired of reading all the Schultz bashing on the Caps blogs from all those hockey “experts” so this was a nice refreshing article. Jeff is still young and will eventually grow into that 6’6″ frame (or so we can hope!)

  4. What’s that old saying about lies, damn lies and statistics? Schultz may be a good defenseman someday, but he’s a weak link now.

  5. As the old saying goes Ted, “Statistics don’t lie, but liars use statistics.” I don’t care how flashy a player is or isn’t. I love guys like Boyd Gordon as much as Ovie. I could care less if Schultz ever scores a goal or posts an assist. For his size, his age and his TOI, he just fails to impress me game after game. Schultz isn’t necessarily the worst the Caps have on the team or in the system, but he’s a far cry from the best. His +/- is skewed since PP/PK don’t count, and Schultz is horrible on the PK. Most of his + seems to come from being in the right place at the right time, making the line change just as a scoring chance comes around. He may need more time to develop, but he’d be better getting that in the AHL.

  6. Ted I left a comment for you yesterdays blog about mr abe..hope you enjoyed….thanks..let go caps..98caps
