love alex, but it was too staged….note that mike green did not want any part of it
celebrate in the moment any way you want alex, but AO please please don’t turn into TO
The Caps have never won the Stanley Cup, so get off the back of the one person that can make it happen.
Let OV be OV!!!
I don’t think the stick schtick was insulting per se (though of course, opponents are going to use any crutch for motivation that they can find, real or imagined), but it was hokey. At least it wasn’t one of those chest-thumping self-aggrandizing gestures we see in the NFL all the time. When you think about it, Ovie’s celebration sort of suggested it was the STICK that deserved the credit!
If the NHL and its purists would like to see a damper on celebrations, may I suggest that for the rest of the season the Caps do absolutely NOTHING after a goal. No gathering of the players on the ice. No emotion whatsoever. The players on the ice proceed directly to the bench, the new players proceed directly to center ice, line up, and say “let’s play.” Let’s see how the NHL likes 20 automatons.
I am a life-long hockey fan, and a Caps fan since Day One, and a big, big Ovie fan. But, the 50-goal celebration was a no-class bush-league farce.
Chris above summed it up for me – “The last thing I want to see is Ovie go from authentic excitement to Terrell Owens-type antics. I hope you agree and might say so publicly. My best to you and the Caps!”
Well, I think the celebration of 50 was interesting. I take it in the context of Alex, whom I do not find to be a Terrel Owens, Ocho Cinco, or other NFL dorks. Yes, it was obviously not the spontaneous gestures we associate with him, but still. 23 year old, TOP PLAYER, living his DREAM. Love OV, he is what hockey should be. Last time I was at Verizon I saw behind Alex’s dad. We won, AO did great, and after the game, I shook his dad’s hand and said: Thank you for your son… He did not understand what I said, but there was some understanding there…
I just hope to be able to get a single game ticket next year… Ted, are you holding some back for those of us who can’t buy 82? I am a fan, bought a 3-pack with a friend this year… Am worried that I won’t be able to see my team (and know that I grew up in Montreal and now regard the caps as MY team!)…
I thought it was funny and clever….and next time he plays Tampa he’s going to have to keep his head up. What a hot shot…literally. He’ll mellow with age, for now we should enjoy it.
I agree 100% with this guy. Alex has passion and he is the reason I got back into hockey and I know I am far from the only person that has Ovechkin to thank for having so much love for the game again. Instead of bashing him people should be thanking him for bringing in more fans. So thanks Alex and thank you Ted for bringing him to the caps and picking up other guys who have passion and making hockey so much fun for me to watch in person and on tv. GO CAPS!
Forget about Don Cherry and whatever he says. It is not important. What is important is that a stunt like he did last night may get him seriously hurt in the future. This is not the NFL where prima donas stage ridiculous end zone celebrations. People last nights “celebration” was not spontaneous. He planned it along with Green and Backstrom who apparently backed out at the last second.
Right now there is some big bad defenseman somewhere in this league who is planning a major hit against our boy. Just watch and see what happens. This is not about Ovechkin. Its about the team and if someone breaks his leg and he misses the playoffs then some of you will be singing a different tune.
I can’t say I didn’t get a chill up my back and say a ” oh that’s not good ” under my breath when OV did his hot stick bit but I think I may be one of the few who gets why he did it and why it was pre-planned…To piss off and give the finger to Don Cherry. It had nothing to do with showing off or showing up or disrespect to the game or Lighting or fans.
If Rick “can I lay down a bet” Tocchet or Ryan Malone doesn’t like it then maybe they should work on stopping OV from scoring otherwise shut their pieholes.
OV is great for the sport of hockey and the NHL and maybe one day Bettmen will see that OV is the face of the NHL not that stick in the mud Crosby ( notebook paper has more of a personality ).
Today the NHL and Ovechkin have been the talk of sports.
The NHL needs days like this.
Like it or “Lump” it. It’s been years since hockey has received this much attention. Ovechkin is who he is and I like the fact that he is unpredictable. He doesnt care what anyone thinks outside of his team.
I think it is great that Ovie celebrates after he scores and I hate it when professional sports leagues of all type frown on and even penalize any spontaneous burst of emotion on the part of athletes. However, there is a difference between simply celebrating and showing up your opponent which I think is the case here. As a Caps fan, I think it is well and good to mark great individual accomplishments. However, Alex’s “stick on fire” routine based on the Post story looked to be an additional response to that old has-been in Canada Don Cherry as well as an unnecessary provocation to the Lightning that should be beneath a star of his stature. Alex, forget about Cherry and any other distractions. Just get the Cup and bring it to DC. The Caps always seem to get in trouble when they emphasize the individual over the team and I am afraid that may be happening in this case. Save such exuberance for when the team objectives are reached – the division title, #1 conference seed, and ultimately the Stanley Cup. Alex, I look forward to how you creatively use the Cup as a prop when you and your teammates celebrate the ultimate team accomplishment. And if you get another Hart MVP, Art Ross trophy, with a few ESPYs thrown in, so much the better. But GET THE CUP!!!
I’m compelled to comment, Ted. I think the hot stick theatrics is too much. There’s just a line, to me, between the exuberance of jumping into the glass and the staged theatrics we saw last night. I love Ovie’s excitement, and his genuine love of the game, and of course, his highlight goals. When he cupped his ear after his unreal goal a few weeks ago, I was all for that. That’s just a player getting the crowd going. We see it all the time in football or any other sport. The last thing I want to see if Ovie go from authentic excitement to Terrell Owens-type antics. I hope you agree and might say so publicly. My best to you and the Caps!
Ok, I didnt care much for the 50th goal celebration. However, I have read several articles this morning on the subject, all with good points. Now my two cents…who knows exactly what Alex is thinking but really what was the harm in his past celebrations? NONE! So now maybe Cherry has something to yap about…was it pleasing NO, but after all Alex has done for the game of Hockey for Cherry etc. to bash his genuine excitement maybe Alex just gave him an excuse! I so wish Alex would go back to his genuine celebrations…Ted, I have emailed you on this topic recently, would like your thoughts and or opinion…since Cherry’s comment the celebrations from Alex just havent been write?!?!?!
