Don’t Go Overboard Please

I have received many threatening emails or instant messages and some emails that can be considered quite suspect over the many years of our Washington Capitals ownership.

I even get blog comment postings from people trying to cover their true identity. Please be aware that everything has a digital fingerprint and if you do send something threatening or truly despicable, your identity can be traced back to its eventual source by the authorities.

It is a wonderful experience to be a passionate fan. It is also a great experience to interact with fans but sometimes keyboard courage or actions such as this fan made (click here for details) can and will get you into legal trouble. Please think before you hit “send”. Thank you.

  1. Hockey isn’t life or death… it’s just as important, mind you. In reality though, if you ask my wife, it’s not as important as life and death. Nothing is as important as life and death, and only chocolate is more important… ;-)

Seriously, nothing wrong with passion for your team, but when it gets to be something beyond yelling and screaming, it’s time for a heavy dose of reality…

  2. I read about that, and was surprised. Hey, Bill, is it wrong that I think Crosby is a top notch player but I still hate him for his personality?

    Oh well. Can’t please everyone.

  3. Ted,
I’m sorry you have to deal with this sort of stuff. You are, in my opinion, the most honest and straight-forward professional sports team owner. You deal with fans in a respectful and honest manner.

Other fans from other teams, NHL, NBA, MLB and especially NFL- wish their owner could be as community-minded as you are…

    Thanks and take care.

  4. I think my brother sums it up simply with my favorite quote of his : “Never underestimate the stupidity of people; they will prove you wrong every time.”

  5. That guy does kind of bring new meaning to flamer doesn’t he? I think it all comes down to the fact that some people don’t have the writing skill or vocabulary to express their feelings and just grab the most extreme words – “oh no we lost two games in a row…shoot the coach the gm is Hitler and the owner is a moron (never mind that he’s made more after taxes on a good day than most of us will see pass through our hands in a lifetime)”. I have all but given up reading comments. Another thing that drives me nuts is the folks that think if they are an Ovechkin fan or a Crosby fan, they are morally obligated to hate the other. Both are awesome players, deal with it already. (putting away soapbix now.)

  6. How sad. I know you’ve attempted to address this issue “kindly” many times. Hopefully this is blunt enough for your faceless bullies . . .?
