Mike Green is having an amazing year, isn’t he? Despite missing 14 games, he has now scored 30 goals and has 70 points. This is bordering on a historic season as he also broke the NHL record for most goals scored in consecutive games for a defenseman. To put 30 goals in perspective for you, that is as many or more goals as scored by Sidney Crosby; Pavel Datsyuk; Jason Spezza; Henry Zetterberg; Vinnie Lecavalier; Mike Richards or Ryan Smyth.
And Nicklas Backstrom ain’t too shabby either. He is now 10th in the NHL in scoring with 82 points.
Oh yeah. Alex Ovechkin now has 54 goals scored. He leads all goal scorers by a dozen goals.
Enough about individual stats. On to the playoffs and being all about team.
Pat,
Thanks, I was just going to mention that Jose’s 30th win was lost in all the history this team is making.
Thanks Ted for mentioning my boy Nickie. He doesn’t get mentioned often.
Ed Morgans:
If no other defenseman who scored 30 goals in a season did it in fewer than 70 games, Bobby Orr had a heck of a finish in the 1974-75 season when he scored 46 goals in 80 games.
If he had only 29 goals in 69 games, he would have had to have scored 17 goals in the last 11 games! What a finish!
Do you think that’s really what he did?
I think Japersrink debunked the whole “Green’s the 8th D-man” thing when DMG posted that Housley scored 7 of his 31 goals as a Center.
Oh snap. Make that list smaller, eh?
I think he’ll win the Norris, Ted, so no worries about being taken for granted.
Might cost you down the line though.
and just think teddy..there was a short time ago when it was caps who?…could not give a ticket away…now and I must say its taken a while but you and your team have put together a caps team that when playing there game is the best team in nhl..this team will raise lord stanley in 09……..98caps
meet him briefly at a caps open house last summer, and he was incredibly gracious with his time and friendly.
You have one amazing team who work well together and genuinely like each other. That is so important. They are true team players in every sense of the word. When they are in sync with each other and following the drills, they are incredible. When they get too far under pressure, they can get desperate and lose control. All in all, they are a great bunch of guys with great attitude, and I very much enjoy watching them play!! Hats off also to your staff and coaches!! They certainly deserve some credit!!
Of the 8 defenseman who have scored 30 goals in a season, none did it in fewer than 70 games, and Green won’t play 70 games this season.
Speaking of taken for granted … all Caps fans, especially the newer ones, should read this article in the City Paper:

Green needs a raise.
Don’t forget about Jose getting his 30th win.
