Read this headline describing the story within called Dreams Comes Closer and the descriptor of “DC has finally become a hockey town”.
We are hosting the NCAA Final Four. We will start the NHL playoffs at home next week. For every game, every seat is gone. The city is abuzz with “hockey talk”. Click here to read this article.
And the Washington Post is on the money: DC is a hockey town. And to all of those parents who have transported their kids to cold hockey rinks in the early mornings - an experience I shared for many years - we salute and thank you!
And a shout out and thank you to the Pollin Family for having faith in the city; founding the Washington Capitals; and locating Verizon Center, home of the NCAA Frozen Four this year. Abe always believed DC could become a hockey town, a dream I have shared for many years as well. If the Washington Post says it, it must be true.
And yet, the Washington Post this week has all but ignored the Frozen Four. While sometimes I think you go overboard in criticizing MSM, editorial decisions like this do make me wonder. In any event, had a great time at yesterday’s games with 18,000+ true hockey fans and looking forward to tomorrow. Thanks for helping make this possible.
There’s a pretty big difference between being a “hockey town” and having members of the community support a hot team. Sorry. It’s never going to happen.
Ted: With all due respect to Abe for bringing the franchise to DC… these props all belong to you. I was there front row when the Red Wings won the cup and the stands were filled with Detroit fans after “La Sooz” marketed the Cup games in Detroit more than in DC. Today I am so happy to know that when we win the cup no matter who we are playing the stands will be filled with Caps fans. That’s thanks to you’re passion, loyalty, business acumen, and marketing genius; as well as due to GM the GM’s talent building. While other DC sports franchises continue on the path of mediocrity, ego, and comedy; the Caps have become a true phenomenon made up of likable hard working and talented guys and their leaders who command our respect and admiration. THANK YOU!
Quite incredible! I can’t believe this – I know you did years ago, but it’s so nice to see this all evolve for you, DC and the fans!
DC has Ted, Dallas has Cuban and we have Jim Dolan….. ’nuff said!
With all due respect Ted, I don’t believe for a NY minute that Abe Pollin ever cared a whit about hockey and the Capitals. What he cared about was having another tenant in the arena.
