Ted's Take

The Blogging Site of Ted Leonsis

I was Tongue-Tied

So I met the President today after his speech at Georgetown University. He spoke about our economy and about his plans for a new mission and recovery and turnaround. He was eloquent, charismatic and on top of his game. He spoke about education, health care, green tech and Wall Street and Main Street. The speech was really meaty as well as inspirational.

He was introduced to me and my wife. We shook hands and all I could say was, “Mr. President - we would love to host you at a playoff game this week. The Caps play on Wednesday and Saturday at Verizon Center.”

He laughed, touched me on the arm and said, ”I have heard great things about your team and I bet it will be a lot of fun. We will get back to you.” He then walked away.

When he was on the stage before he spoke, he saw Steve Case in the crowd and gave him the Hawaiian “hang loose” sign as they went to the same high school in Honolulu.

I can’t believe that that was the only thing that I could muster meeting the President of the United States.

  4. Ken Okoth says:

I am so happy for you! I hope he can come to a game and bring Michelle, Grandma and the kids too. I think imagine it’d be a fantastic time to send time your family and his family and friends together at a game!

  5. You said much more than I would’ve said. I would’ve been busy stumbling over my first word. Also, I would like to say thank you all you can in continuing to make Washington as the new Hockeytown, USA. Hopefully President Obama takes up your offer as he has acknowledged every other DC team except the Capitals. I hope he comes out and discovers the amount of fun and excitement everyone else has. Thanks again Mr. Leonsis! See you at the game tomorrow night!

At least you managed to invite him to a game! When I randomly met him at work over the summer all I could do was apologize for the ice cream I had spilled all over my pants :)

  7. Jim Hershberg says:

Great! Yes he can–and yes we can–and yes they can–Rock the Red and Win the CUP!

  8. Jim says:

Yeah, we know. You’re a Dem. Stick to hockey.

  9. HockeyAmor says:

    Hey Ted,

Well done! I hope for you & the Caps that he shows up.

  10. Section 117 says:

Well he actually needs to see the place bouncing not BECAUSE he’s there, so I don’t blame you.

  11. Maura Sheehan Constantine says:

    Ted,
For me as a Democrat, Obama campaign worker and dog breeder, I was more excited about the arrival of their new dog “Bo’ than any speech at Georgetown!! Don’t get me wrong, I know you went there, I’ve visited and love Georgetown, but I cannot help but think the big news today had to do with his daughters and the families’ addition of the new pup!

  12. Jeff Schneider says:

That is because you are a real person. That is why everyone thinks you are great! I hope he comes.

  13. I wouldn’t sweat it too much! Barack is just the same as the rest of us - and if he hasn’t already, he’ll probably get tongue tied the first time he meets Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods.

  14. Stephan Levesque says:

Wouldn’t it be something if Obama Rocked the Hawk?!! Let’s Go Caps!

  15. Mariano says:

So Cool…hopefully we can convert him because when he came here, he said that he was excited to see all the other DC teams but failed to mention the Caps…Time to work your magic Ted and bring the president on our side
Go Caps!…maybe he’ll drop the puck tonight

  16. Steve in Jersey says:

I’d say that was about the best thing you could have said. If the Prez shows up for a hockey game, and a playoff game at that, it would do wonders to grow the NHL’s reach. He likely won’t show, but you’ve a few more seasons to get him there. Put it on your list!

  17. EddieMac says:

That’s exactly what I said to him too… So tell Slapshot to send the burritos up to the 400s, I’m trying to impress the man.

  18. Steven says:

I know I’m not the President, but I’ll be there tonight and Saturday.

  19. Nick says:

    what else matter right now?
    c-a-p-s caps caps caps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Leonsis — it is wonderful to see you too are vulnerable to the tounge tied moment! If he doesn’t take the offer can I? :) Of course it would mean allowing a Ranger Fan into the box, so I will assume no!

    LETS GO RANGERS!

  22. Heather Lufkin says:

Now the President knows where your passion is at this time of year. Now that your meeting with him is past you can go ahead and Rock the Hawk Hair Cut!

  23. Rebecca Fortier says:

    Ted,

Please let Theodore know that the Sports News reports are wrong. The Caps fans have total confidence in his ability as our goalie.

    LET’S GO CAPS!!!!

  24. Gary Karr says:

Ted, that’s exactly what you SHOULD have said to him. It was a big chance to get in a request. You went for the marbles and did us Caps fans proud. Economy, schmonomy … Let’s Go Caps!
