Do Me a Favor?

Do me a favor. Let us “jerk it out” NOW. (See video here for one of my favorite classic songs to boot.) “Jerk it out” means be loud; go crazy; say anything; and angst and dance away.

I have already started to receive angst-filled emails from certain Caps fans pining away for the good old days and concerned about our D; our goaltending; our playoff readiness; our toughness; our overabundance of skill; our lack of heart; our size; our skill level; our leadership; our grittiness; our speed; our GM; our coach; our ownership; our lack of secondary scoring; lack of tickets available; the price of tickets; the food; the traffic; the Metro schedule; the ushers; and the ice. One fan even said - and I quote – “I am 95 percent sure you will lose this series because…”

The Audacity of Nope

I was on a plane this weekend and read a bunch of magazines. I was starting to feel good that we had hit bottom and were starting to trend upwards in so many different ways – jobs, loans, home sales, stock market and attitude.

But then I read The Economist cover story on the April 4th issue called “Under Attack – Get the Rich - The Rise and Fall of the Wealthy”. According to our friends at The Economist, if you have a net worth – all in - of more than $1 million, you are part of the problem and your days are numbered. :-)

Like Bell Bottoms – What is Old is New and Hip Again

A friend of mine was raving about MySpace and how they are holding online concerts to support artists. I replied, ”Been there, done that.” At AOL, we started that practice in 1994. We also did Live 8 and pioneered bringing in solo artists to perform online or to broadcast concerts. One of my favorites – don’t laugh – was Rod Stewart at the Apollo Theatre on the welcome screen of AOL.com. And then it was Dave Matthews in Central Park on the welcome screen. Remember that one? In 1993, we hosted Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger on the Oldsmobile Celebrity Circle. Wow – set your time machines way back for those two!

“Kicking It” Most Popular on Hulu

This is so touching to me. Our film Kicking It has emerged as a most popular film on Hulu.

Think of the synergy here. We produce the film Kicking It. It is an effort of love and a great example of “Filmanthropy”. We now support Street Soccer and the Homeless World Cup as charity concerns too.

Kicking It goes on to SnagFilms. It is seen by the web at large via widgets and our site, SnagFilms.com.

Really Good News and Some Bad News

Check more items off the list we established last off season.

We finished second in the East behind only Boston. We wanted to finish first in the East and didn’t get that check mark completed.

We secured home ice advantage all the way through the Eastern Conference playoffs except if we play Boston.

We garnered the most points in franchise history with 108.

Hope Springs Eternal

The Washington Mystics conducted a great draft yesterday and I am very pleased that we chose – with the second pick in the draft - Marissa Coleman of the University of Maryland.

She has size; quickness; can score; can rebound; and has upside. She is a standout local product and our GM and Coach believe she will fit in so very well with the newly constructed lineup. Did you happen to see her amazing performance on ESPN last month? She was outstanding and I thought was the best player in the ACC tournament.

Slowly and surely the Mystics are showing signs of off season progress. We are retooling the team the right way with a balance of veterans and young players. We all can’t wait for the new season to begin.
