Honored and An Observation

Hulu is featuring my film — “Nanking” — off of its welcome screen — for Memorial Day.  Click here to check it out.  My  bet — more people will see this film on Snagfilms and Hulu and other online outlets  than all other traditional  outlets combined.

This promotion will drive a lot of views and create a lot of buzz for the  film — online is becoming a new  and perhaps most important window for documentary film  distribution. Think of it — you have film festivals where a small group of  “passionates”  can see the film — hundreds and perhaps thousands of people–; then theatrical; where a small subset of theatres will show the film for short term engagement — now less than 500 theatres in the US and perhaps 10,000 people will but tickets  to a very successful doc to generate $1 million in box office;  then a few television outlets ala HBO — or Discovery will buy and then show the film to perhaps tens or hundreds of thousands of people if ratings are good — then you have DVD rentals and sales  via Blockbuster and Netflix — (small numbers ); foreign distribution deals — (small deals); some pay for tv — ( small numbers); and some hotel distribution( small numbers).

And then you have Hulu and Snagfilms and Youtube and IMDb.Nanking is available now in all of these places.  These sites combined have a reach in  excess of 200 million users on a monthly basis. And with Snagfilms — people ar egrabbing the film widget and displaying the film to their audiences too.

My bet — online becomes the way that this film — which won a Peabody Award for Excellence — gets seen by the masses.

Thank you Hulu.
