The Onion nailed his one perfectly. Genius.
Landing on the moon was a huge accomplishment with more than a billion people watching it on television. We spent a gazillion dollars in that decade. We got some Velcro-oriented technology out of the deal.
But we did do it. Seriously, why can’t we do something BIG like that again? Something simple such as ”Within 10 years, every person on Planet Earth will be guaranteed clean water.” We as a people need some big hairy ass goals to pursue. That would be a good one and a good use of our resources.
If we can land men on the moon, we can get people to have clean running water all over the globe.
A great headline Ted. A friend of mine has a shirt with that on it and wore it to the Kentucky Derby back in 2002.
wtf-when did we land on the moon…. in 69… how’d i miss that
10 cents for a newspaper-such a deal
kind of sad how “if we can land on the moon, then…” has long remained short hand for, “as americans we can do anything” even though that feat was achieved *last century* (and the middle of last century at that!)
might as well retort: “if we can broadcast air waves that can be transformed into the sound of my voice, then…”
but we do need a fresh, enormous, far-reaching goal that focuses us all on a single point and more than for a figuratively collective moment. in our fractured existence where everything is micro-sliced into ever-longer segmented tails and americans are being teased away from collective experiences by the alluring appeal of time-shifting this and instant-access that, we might do well to find something big that – with its implausibility alone – the moon landing is put in its rightful place, on the shelf of history next to the first radio broadcast and other galactic achievements.
(and, like tesla’s wireless first, maybe we don’t even need an american idea, just a good one)
This might be the funniest thing I have ever seen!
