Mystics Lead WNBA in Attendance After First Report

Wow. Business is booming at Verizon Center this summer. The team is playing a great brand of basketball and is young, exciting and rebuilt. We just beat the L.A. Sparks at home on Saturday night. The team has depth, stars and plays with passion.

After four games, we are averaging 11,382 fans per game. That is a 33 percent increase over last season.

Only the Good Die Young

Our local community lost a great friend this weekend with the passing of Joe Casella. Joe was only 40 years old. He was a great friend and the owner of Elite Fitness Concepts in Great Falls, Virginia.

Joe was a wonderful husband to his wife Gina; a caring and loving father to three children (his third child being born while he was in recovery from surgery); a man’s man; a gentle soul; and really a pillar of our local community.

He was a physical specimen, one of the best athletes not in professional sports that I have ever known. He was a friend to the elderly and rehabilitating and he pushed the fit to be even fitter. He also served as something of a psychologist and father confessor to us all. He was a great listener and always made me smile. He was a huge Capitals fan but loved the Yankees most of all.

Back from Sun Valley

I am back from The Allen and Co. Sun Valley Conference. I had the best of times. The conference is about networking, family, learning and fun!

Most of the attendees were situated in the media industry; the sports industry; the Internet business; healthcare; and finance and politics. There were many attendees from Washington DC and I was surprised at how many good friends I knew that were at the conference. Most people bring their family members and the feeling of connectedness is palpable. I was really welcomed and felt very comfortable.

Brooklyn Boy Makes Good

One of my longest tenured friends is Mark Rivera, saxophonist for Billy’s Joel band. We grew up together in Brooklyn and have remained in touch all of these years.

He and my family went to lunch yesterday in Georgetown and then we caught the Billy Joel and Elton John concert at Nationals Park as his guest. It was a great concert with two mega-selling artists at the controls. Too many hits to talk about! A great night was had by all.

Mark is a great musician and has played with Ringo, Peter Gabriel, John Lennon and Foreigner. He actually told me when we were kids that he was going to play in The Beatles and he almost did. :-)

It was fantastic to catch up on old times and Mark has committed to play the National Anthem again for us at an upcoming Capitals game. He is so cool and so talented. We are all proud of him. Check out this video by clicking here.

Some Additional Change

We added a new free agent center to our team roster yesterday with the signing of Brendan Morrison. Although we will all miss Victor Kozlov and Sergei Fedorov in our line-up, the two new free agents that we signed – Mike Knuble and Brendan Morrison – actually had better individual statistics last season in comparison so you could rationalize that we have indeed upgraded in each position. Time will tell.

What is most important to me is that we stayed on plan. We added free agents to our line-up on short term deals and at reasonable financial terms and these are really talented veteran players who WANTED to come and play in Washington, some taking less money than they could garner elsewhere because of the quality of our team; our city and fan base; and because everyone wants to play on a Cup contending team. Everyone loves the Kettler Capitals Iceplex and wants to enjoy its comforts.

Russia

Here are two films about Russia. They are very compelling documentaries about this major economic force and world power. Our President just spent quality time in Russia and we all know how much Russia as motherland means to many of our key players. Check these films out this weekend. Click here to watch.
