Ever since the Redskins fell out of regular contention in the mid-1990′s, every triumph this area has enjoyed in professional sports has come…in soccer.
DC United have won 4 MLS Cups and much else besides, and are in playoff position at this time. The Washington Freedom, in their earlier WUSA incarnation, won the Founders Cup in 2003, and their current WPS version is now in that league’s playoffs.
The Capitals, Nationals, Redskins and Wizards over that same span, by comparison, have won a grand total of ZIPPY.
Let’s be glad we’ve got not one but two championship soccer clubs in this area…and let’s get them the soccer-specific stadium (in a Metrorail-accessible area) that they deserve!
