And AOL Content Blossoms

Read this article in the New York Times by clicking here. It sheds light on AOL’s fast growth in content and the launch of new brands. And it also shows how AOL is hiring top notch talent from MSM properties as it grows and monetizes these properties.

The future of publishing is online and AOL is well positioned to play a leading role in content, nesting and launching mega new online brands. I am proud of AOL’s work in this regard.

Admit It – You Didn’t Think AOL Still Had This Many Email Users, Did You?

I still use AOL mail. My two primary email addresses are at an AOL.com domain and I am not afraid to admit it. And after all these years, Gmail just nudged past AOL mail in terms of users. AOL remains in the 4th spot. Yahoo, Microsoft, Google and AOL. AOL mail is quite good, easy to use and fast.

When I look at the large lead that Yahoo has, I could kick myself. All those AOL users that cancelled their paid AOL dial-up service and couldn’t keep their AOL email address, guess where they went? Yep, right to Yahoo. We fed that beast and made it huge. What a key strategic blunder. When you go check your mail, you go to their portal and generate clicks and visits and ad impressions.

But AOL still has size and heft in communications with both great positions in mail and messaging. AIM and ICQ are still the best instant messaging services out there. AOL must re-commit to making mail and messaging better. Kill the spam; tone down the ads; and start to market again. Click here to read TechCrunch on AOL mail.

District 9

Went to see District 9 this weekend. I am kind of speechless. I didn’t know what to expect and was blown away. This film is an oddity. There are no stars; very different production values; and a big budget but a dirty camera filter and unbelievable special effects that push the story along. And I’m betting a sequel is coming within three years.

You will either love or hate this film. It is doing quite well at the box office. It is a political thriller with aliens. You will never look at sea food the same way again.

The Hits Just Keep on Coming

I am a sucker for films like this narrated by Jeremy Irons. Hittites: A Civilization That Changed The World  is a historical romp though time with recreations and great research. It is a perfect documentary film if you love ancient history. Films like this one help us to understand the history of the Middle East and also how and why great cultures and governments crumble. Check it out by clicking here. You will enjoy this film.

Go Gil, Go

This article made me smile and made me happy. Read all about Gilbert Arenas right here

A healthy Gilbert Arenas - playing with attitude and speed - will be such a welcome sight at Verizon Center this coming season. Gil is the straw that stirs the drink.

As minority owners in the Wizards, we root for the team not only as fans but as partners too. And Gilbert Arenas is a charismatic player, one that you can’t take your eyes off of. I can’t wait to see a healthy and explosive Gilbert Arenas BACK in great form and sold out crowds cheering away to boot.

Morphing the Caps Website

You will start to see some subtle yet meaningful changes to the Capitals website over the next few months. Some changes are because we are working closely together with the folks at NHL.com and some of our own design. Click here for the first inkling of change.

The new platform promises us more capabilities locally and should also offer the league a better network effect. We also promise to continue to invest in local services; content and video; and to make our website inviting and very interactive and informative.

Picks and Pans

Picks:

  • Man on Wire - Just watched this Academy Award winner. What a fantastic documentary. Get it today on DVD.
  • The Soloist - A bit grumpy but wonderful acting, a heart wrenching film based on a true story just out on DVD.
  • This issue of Newsweek. Great writing on crime; serial murderers and a great first person story about growing up with a drug dealing father. Very powerful stuff.
  • Bangkok Haunts – John Burdett does it again. A fast thriller of a read.

Pans:

  • G.I. Joe – Don’t go. Yikes. $100 plus million for that? Looked like mid ’60′s puppet animation with the worst screenplay imaginable. What were they thinking?
  • Time Magazine cover story on exercise – What were they trying to say? Don’t exercise? I didn’t get it. Why a cover story on that subject? Weird choice.
