Thank You

The Washington Post print edition has an entire section devoted to the start of the NHL season and to the Washington Capitals.

We have come a long way indeed as a franchise in a three short years.

To those who much is given, much is expected.

Is this the year?

That is the theme of the special section.

We will be tested early and often as we play some great teams from last season right off the bat - teams such as Boston, Philly, San Jose, Detroit, New Jersey and the New York Rangers - all right in the first three weeks of the season.

Drop the puck. Game on. Thank you.

The Right To Be Left Alone

Larry Flynt.

A fight for the right to party – to say anything you want - anywhere.

Here is his story and his fight for pure First Amendment rights and free speech.

This is a great film. Make your own conclusions whether this fight was worth it for him and his family. This is a moving personal piece. He is an American original.

Several people who post on our message boards and on my blog subscribe to absolute free speech as a doctrine. In fact, I posted about the poll concerning our President yesterday on Facebook and one comment via email to me was “This person has an absolute first amendment right to say whatever he/she wants. It is un-American to take this poll down or to punish the Facebook member.”

Perhaps?

Watch this film. It deals with tough subjects on free speech.

VERSUS vs. DirecTV

I am a DirecTV subscriber. I feel your pain.

As I understand it, you should be writing to DirecTV NOT to me about this carriage of the network issue.

Here is information from NHL.com. Please email or call DirecTV NOT me. Thank you.

I also understand that your local cable company may have some good offers regarding NHL games and season ticket passes. Don’t hesitate to call your local cable company, too, to find out what to do to watch the games.

I want to help BUT I don’t own DirecTV or the cable MSO or VERSUS. Please communicate directly with them as I have. Thank you.

Pledges

Here is a nice slide show of images from the wonderful Caps Convention this past Saturday. Check them out here on On Frozen Blog.

Someone asked me on Saturday if I would commit to them that we would do the Caps Convention on an annual basis. I responded that we would have to get perspective first on how this one went and listen to our fan base about how to improve before we could make any decisions. That got me to thinking about commitment and pledges.

So herewith my pledges to you:

  • We will always operate the team as if it is a public trust. It is our job and responsibility to hold a mirror up to our community and be a reflection of the best of our fan base;
  • We will always strive to be transparent and open and communicate often and honestly with our fan base;
  • We will be interactive and high tech/high touch as an organization;
  • We will always remain humble and hungry and sweat all of the details;
  • We will be first class in all of our efforts. We will do less things but the things we do undertake as a franchise will be world class in execution;
  • We will adhere to a system and a plan and stick with our strategy;
  • We will strive for continuity and harmony;
  • We will strive to offer value in all offerings to our fans. We seek ” Happiness” as a state of mind and being for our fan base;
  • We will be an innovator and leader in our marketing and customer relations efforts;
  • We will work hard to keep our team together so we can ice a great team for a long time;
  • We will only be focused as an organization on winning the Stanley Cup. We have a singular goal.

Thank you to all of our fans who attended the Caps Convention this weekend. Thank you to all of our fans who can’t wait for the new season to start. We have our hands full to meet expectations this season. Might as well go out and see what we are made of. Drop the puck – let’s go! Go Caps!

“The Lost Symbol”

The reviews - as you would expect – aren’t so great. I think newspaper writers are just jealous of Dan Brown and his mega bestselling success.

I am about 150 pages in to the new book. I like it. It is fast paced. It is very articulate about DC and many of the buildings we see every day. It is factual and insightful about our city; its architecture; and much of its history.

We do live in a city built by Free Masons. Our city planner was connected to George Washington in numerous personal ways. The dollar bill is loaded with symbols that are of interest to code breakers. This book is fun. It will soon be turned into yet another film. Read the book. Enjoy the ride. Blow off the critics.

And remember, as I drove to the Capitals Convention yesterday, we went right by the Mason Temple in Arlington, a place where George Washington’s wooden dentures are hidden. Ever wonder why? :-) And why is that building placed where it is in a triangular shape across from the Washington Monument? And guess where it intersects and end points as a triangle? Kettler Capitals Iceplex! What is buried deep under our ice? Why did we change our color scheme and what is the meaning of our new logo? Why is the Capitol Dome placed where it is? Coincidence? You decide.

Capitals Convention

Thanks to all of you who visited and spent so much time at the Capitals Convention on Saturday.

I know I met at least 2,000 people personally; got my picture taken with thousands of you; and signed autograph after autograph. I did my best to mingle and meet you all. I was exhausted at the end of the day but had a great time. I am very appreciative of the people that want to meet me and humbled when you ask for my autograph. I only stopped mingling when I had to go to the men’s room and I even signed some autographs in the bathroom, too!

I would like to thank Gary Bettman and Bill Daly for coming down to our convention on a Saturday from NYC. They made great presentations; mingled with our fans and media; and worked hard on our behalf. I thought Mr. Bettman did a great job in our keynote speech at 10:00 am and was very candid and honest on a number of tough subjects.

Cool New Place

My family and I dined at a great new place called Cava. It is on 8th Street in DC behind the Capitol Building. It is the best little new restaurant we have found of late.

The atmosphere was casual and cool. The service was fast, efficient and friendly. The food was spectacular. We ordered and tasted about one dozen little plates: A unique Greek salad; Greek pizza; and lamb sliders. The chef is very creative. The food is healthy. The plates are tasty and it is served in a unique fashion.

We live in such a great city. Places like this deserve our support. It was packed and buzzing last night and deservedly so. I shall return. You should check it out if you live in DC. Five stars from me!
