A member of the media was talking to me about the respective local fan bases of our sports teams and made some off handed misinformed comments to me; I said — “you must have been an English major because your math doesn’t add up”.
So — our favorite local NFL team has a stadium that seats about 91k fans. They play 8 home games per year. That means their inventory to sell is at about 728k seats.
Your local favorite NHL team has about 19,000 seats per game to sell; and we play 41 games per season.
Hence — we sell about 779 k seats to our fans in a sold out season.
Just saying…….show just a little respect to the NHL when it comes time to talk about the status of ticket sales in a local market. We have to sell a heck of a lot of tickets during a season..and we do.

Ted on the topic of tickets, I just read this article this morning http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/01/AR2009090103984.html?wprss=rss_metro
and all I kept thinking was wow, I’m so glad this isn’t happening with the Caps! I’m so glad that steps are taken to make red the primary color at the Verizon center! I’m proud to be a season ticket holder for the best sports team in Washington!!! Thank you Ted for everything you do to keep the Caps fans in the seats and rocking the red!!!
good post, Ted. the local NFL team gets way too much media coverage, in my humble opinion. while coverage has improved, local media outlets could do a much better job of covering the Capitals and the NHL.
can’t wait for the first preseason game. GO CAPS!!!!
MATH YOUR STRONG SUIT????
