Did You Know?

Did you know…?

  • The Capitals spend more on player payroll than the Nationals and the Orioles?
  • The sport of Lacrosse was played by Native American Indians to prepare for war?
  • That the term “really got your goat” was from horse racing? A goat was placed in a stall with a race horse to provide companionship. The goat calmed down the horse in the stall so “getting your goat” was what an enemy did to upset you and your horse. Who knew?
  • Americans still spend $2 billion per year on candles?
  • The most common first name in the world is Muhammad?
  • Karate was invented in India?
  • The first hockey puck was frozen cow dung?
  • Basketball was invented by a Canadian?

Speaking of the Olympics – Here is the Latest Sport

Greasy Pole flag challenges. Think you can walk on a balance beam - over water - that is coated with 8 inches of grease? Go for it.

Here is the seven minute film about this sport. I would like to see Olympic hopefuls handle this event. Let us see how tough they really are. This is all about authenticity and true sportsmanship. Enjoy the film on SnagFilms.com.

SBNation Gets a Facelift for Fall

Here is a positive story in the Washington Post about SBNation, a network of blogs that is rapidly growing and is headed up by my good friend Jim Bankoff.

This next generation media network – focused on sports - has received major venture capital backing and represents, somewhat, the future of sports journalism. Locally Japers’ Rink is a part of the network and is the NHL affiliate. I disclose that I am a small investor in this company but do not serve on its board of directors. The new homepage and design – which is launching to coincide with the kick off of the NFL season – is crisp and feels more like a national portal. Well done. Go to SBNation.com and see for yourself.
