Sit In and Strike

I am in NYC at a ritzy hotel. I just checked in and the employees are all on strike chanting “Scab! Scab! Scab!” as a manager helped check me in at registration. About 300 employees are chanting and yelling ”Power to the people!” and they have blocked all entrances at the hotel.

The union leader has a megaphone. This is a scene right out of the 60′s. Instead of turning me off, I will come here all of the time. “Power to the people! Ride on! We shall overcome!” This is too cool.

  1. Somehow “Power to the People” just doesn’t carry the same weight when it’s being chanted by unionized labor.

  2. I wonder how you’d react if people in your organization did the same thing? I doubt you’d think it was so cool.

  3. It’s always nice to see a rich guy show up and pronounce people fighting for their economic existence as “cool.” I am sure they are happy to see that their struggle to make something approaching a living wage so they can feed their families is amusing to you.

Ted, I always thought you were an interesting and decent fellow. You may want to re-think your tone on this one.

Nice. Power to the people indeed. Have you noticed all of the new music releases this year? In my humble opinion 2009 has already surpassed all other years, even 1969 and 1991, for new music releases. Not only that, coinciding with the advent of new media; everyone is dipping their toes in and doing it whichever way they can think of.

Radiohead and Thom Yorke have released two new songs this year as they have been recorded. One available online free to download, torrent, pay, don’t, as you please. The second song is a tribute to the last surviving WWI soldier who recently passed. It’s Thom Yorke’s version of the double-bottom line business model. To download the song there is a charge of one dollar, or pound, proceeds donated to the British Foreign Legion. Thom’s mission is to keep the needless violence and loss of life in the forefront of the worlds public Consciousness so that we may work towards a world without war.

Yesterday the Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan, shared his concept for his band via web outlets; new Pumpkins album. 44 songs are to be released individually with the first track arriving close to Halloween. Apropos.
Returning to the tighter four-song EP format Billy sees 11 limited edition EPs with a final box-set upon completion. It has been reported that Thom Yorke and Radiohead are also trending toward the EP format; and may be recording with a symphony.

San Francisco is vibing again; a counter culture exists; long, shaggy hair, beards, folk, and funky sunglasses. Everybody’s on tour, in the studio, reuniting for a tour, reinventing, revolutionizing and recording new music. Artists around the world have been energized and are producing. Even advertising is getting better; unless it is coming from Madison Ave. I’ve got a bone to pick with them.

Trend seems to be true for film too. Looking at a few gems out now, and seeing some work in the pipeline. It seems that the “Promise of the Cinema “ has been taken from the shelf and shined, adults can begin to look towards the American cinema once more, and everyone everywhere is making a film. Get ready.

Phish just released a new studio album. And the new work of Depeche Mode alone met the mark for me. First listen for me was at 13 compliments a new So-Cal friend having moved in to the neighborhood. Thought it was the silliest think I’d ever heard, but two days later had melodies playing in my mind and sought the cassette from friend; ‘cause I just wanted to look at the picture on the front ‘n stuff. You know. Music for the Masses.

We have written before about the phenom. of the bands of the 80’s and early 90’s still being the best bands in the world and delivering beyond all expectation and hope all the while.

I was bewildered. Until, upon the recent release of the new Dinosaur Jr. album asked the question, “What effect did Kurt Cobain’s suicide have.” I think one effect is that all of his peers never gave up; kept going. Stopping just wasn’t on the books; wasn’t considered. Those who split; got back together. “We got to find a way. A better way; a better way.” – Kurt Cobain

I’ve been doing research at a local law library and came across a treasure of texts; the ones I was honing in on (five or six specific to the film and music industries) and a whole lot more. Very interesting the books you can find at the law library.

Here; I share with you an exerpt of an exciting text I got into today; in case anyone thought it was just rock-and-roll ;-jeff

“Lyrics and the Law: the Constitution of Law in Music” Aaron R.S. Lorenz Vandeplas Publishing KF 4291 L67 2007
    (from back cover)
    “About the book:
    (2nd paragraph)
“The book highlights the impact that musicians have in constituting law through their lyrics. When musicians remind the listener of the injustices in society, call for social change, or give their interpretation of legal theory, an image of law is constituted and that image often becomes the law. When musicians create music, they are simultaneously creating Law. Their experiences, language, and motives encompass their being and develop an image of law, which the listener subsequently adopts. Their lyrics constitute what law is for “the people” which is often a direct response to the State’s version of what law is or should be. Music is similar to or a reaction to law.”
    (Hhhmmmm….)

    (text begins with quote)
“There’s been times that I thought
    I wouldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able to carry on
It’s been a long, long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
    Oh, yes it will.

    Depeche Mode video “Peace”
Speaks for self I think. Ambiguity of gender/deliberate androgyny so that main character and others represent us all as well as highlight the fundamental sameness of the male and female. This connectedness in representation is mirrored in the visual representation of the American armed forces while clearly set in a foreign land of hardship not found in the US.
